Over 200,000 flooded cars back on U.S. roads

Hundreds of thousands of flooded cars have washed up on the shores of every state in the country. According to new research from Carfax, more than 212,000 cars that were branded as flood damage by a state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are on U.S. roads right now.
Nearly two-thirds of these flood damaged cars are on the road in ten states – TexasNew Jersey,PennsylvaniaKentuckyLouisianaIllinoisNew YorkFloridaMississippi and Virginia. However, as the Carfax research shows, scam artists are moving flood cars to any state where unknowing consumers will buy them.
"Our research proves that flood damaged cars are everywhere," said Larry Gamache, communications director at Carfax. "It's big business for professional con men to quickly clean up and resell these cars miles from where the flooding occurred. Consumers need to look out for flooded cars no matter where they live. They're a serious danger to anyone who unknowingly buys one."
Floodwater, especially salt water like from Superstorm Sandy, rots and corrodes vehicles from the inside out. Carfax recently recovered a Hurricane Sandy flood car to analyze the extensive internal water damage as well as demonstrate how easily cars can be made to appear safe and reliable on the outside.
"Flood cars are a volatile mixture of water, metal and electricity," continued Gamache. "Once a car is ravaged by water, the mechanical, electrical or safety systems can fail at any time. There's also the health risk, as mold and bacteria permeate the vents and soft parts of the interior. Know what you're putting you and your family into before laying down your hard-earned money. Start with a Carfax Vehicle History Report and thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic."
Historically, about half of the cars damaged by floods get resold, some to unsuspecting buyers. As a service to consumers, Carfax lets you check for flood damage free of charge at flood.carfax.com.

Hyundai and Rhys Millen Racing teaming up for the Global RallyCross Series at the 2013 ESPN Summer X-Games

Rhys Millen's Veloster in mid-air.
Hyundai and Rhys Millen Racing are once again teaming up for the Global RallyCross Series at the 2013 ESPN Summer X-Games in Los Angeles. This year’s competition moves from the ultra-tight circuit on the streets of downtown Los Angeles to the purpose-built racing facility in Irwindale, California. This new circuit is sure to change the dynamics and strategy for the race, with more room for the late braking, passing, drifts and big-gap jumps that make this event a racing fan favorite.
“I can’t wait to get back in the Veloster Rallycar racing seat”, said Millen. “Of course it’s a great opportunity to go wheel-to-wheel with some of the best rally drivers in the world, right in our own backyard. Even more, it’s a great opportunity to show off the performance potential of the Hyundai Veloster Rallycar, just a few miles from Hyundai headquarters. With Veloster’s power and handling and my rally experience we’re aiming to be first off the apex on Sunday.”
Steve Shannon, vice president of marketing for Hyundai Motor America, echoed, “The Hyundai Veloster, with its high performance direct-injected, turbocharged powertrain and wide, aggressive stance, is the perfect sport coupe for enthusiasts of any lifestyle. It’s great to team up again with a world-class racer like Rhys Millen to show Veloster’s full potential. We’re more than excited about our prospects on Sunday.”
HYUNDAI RMR VELOSTER RALLYCAR
CHASSIS
RMR employees applied everything they know about fabricating racecars into the Veloster Rallycar. The production Veloster was stripped to bare metal and the chassis spent five days in an Alkali bath removing all rubber and adhesives. The chassis was also stitch welded for added structural rigidity.
CARBON/KEVLAR BODY PANELS
Millen quickly decided to take the already lightweight Veloster and make it even lighter. His crew took molds of the Veloster body panels to replicate them out of carbon/Kevlar. The hood, doors, quarter panels, front fascia and rear fascia are all built out of carbon/Kevlar. The carbon/Kevlar panels are 75 percent lighter than the sheet metal they replaced. Downforce has been further increased by a custom RMR rear wing. The hood is vented to dissipate heat.
SUSPENSION
The Hyundai RMR Veloster Rally car utilizes a custom suspension with generous travel for the big-gap jumps.
WHEELS, TIRES AND BRAKES
To ensure that the enhanced power plant translates all the way to track performance, RMR added custom built 18-inch HRE wheels and 245/40-18 Hankook Racing tires. Stopping power comes from 14-inch Alcon brake rotors and six piston Alcon calipers.

Global Rallycross Mid-Season Review: Subaru

After a frustrating 2012 season that saw Subaru PUMA Rallycross Team score only one podium in 19 starts between four drivers, the goal for 2013 was to be a more competitive team overall. Though bad luck has still plagued them this season, there’s no doubt that Sverre Isachsen, Bucky Lasek, and Dave Mirra are more competitive this year than in the last one.
Subaru’s season started a round later than the rest of the paddock, making their first starts at X Games Munich after missing X Games Foz do Iguacu and being unable to compete in the rain-cancelled X Games Barcelona event. The first Munich race ended in disappointment, as no Subarus made it into the main event.
Things appeared to turn around when Isachsen made it to the main event in the second Munich race, but the race ended in frustration yet again when Ken Block turned Isachsen around with less than half a lap to go in the final. The incident cost Subaru a sure-fire fourth place finish, but the speed that Isachsen demonstrated proved that the cars were more competitive than last year.
Both Isachsen and Lasek made the main event in New Hampshire, making up for a left front hub issue that prevented Mirra from building upon his spot atop the charts in the first practice session. Isachsen finished sixth, while Lasek would have scored a top five run if not for damage that caused his motor to quit working just short of the finish.
Bristol was another up-and-down weekend for the team, with neither Mirra nor Lasek making the final. But Isachsen made up for it by charging into the first turn, coming out of the carnage second, and preserving fourth place despite a damaged exhaust.
X Games Los Angeles will be the real test of just how far Subaru has come. Mirra is X Games’ all-time leading medalist, while Lasek has swept the past three skateboard vert competitions this year. Isachsen may stand the best chance of medaling among the three, but a strong showing would go a long way towards establishing the team as a bona-fide contender for victories down the road.

Ogier leads Rally Finland

Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) made their mark on day two of the Rally Finland. The Volkswagen pairing leads the fastest rally of the year with the Polo R WRC ahead of the grand finale on Saturday. The two Frenchmen first moved to the top of the overall standings on day two of what is known as “Formula One in the Forest”, before opening up a lead bit by bit. The duo, which leads both the driver and co-driver competitions in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), won seven of the day’s nine special stages and now holds a 38.1-second lead over Thierry Neuville and Mads Østberg (both Ford). On the first of today’s two loops, each of which consisted of four special stages, Ogier/Ingrassia clocked similar top times to their rivals at Ford and Citroën. On the second loop, however, they set an irresistible pace and rounded off a superb day by winning the evening’s Super Special Stage.
Their Volkswagen team-mates also produced impressive displays on Friday, but will no longer play a decisive role in the overall standings. Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN) in the number 9 Polo R WRC were embroiled in a thrilling duel for fifth place with Kris Meeke (Citroën), but were then forced to retire after the penultimate stage of the day with a damaged suspension. They will start again on Saturday with a five-minute penalty, in accordance with Rally 2 regulations. Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) had also lost time due to suspension damage on Thursday. However, the all-Finnish driver/co-driver pairing rejoined the action under Rally 2 regulations and was once again among the fastest cars out on the route. The duo, which currently lies second in both the driver and co-driver competitions in the World Rally Championship, were not to be found outside of the top five on Friday, and finished in the top three on six of the day’s nine stages.

Quotes from VW crew after day two of the Rally Finland

Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #7
“I am happy with the way day two of our home rally panned out. We started under Rally 2 regulations, meaning we were the first car out onto the route. This morning, when the road was still wet after the rain, this was certainly a small advantage, as the grip level was a bit higher. On the second loop, the opposite was true. The many ruts and various tracks left by smaller rally cars did not make driving any easier for us. However, we achieved the goal we had set ourselves for the day: to arrive safely at the finish. We also tried out a few modifications to the set-up of the Polo, which could help us with regard to the forthcoming rallies.”

Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #8
“More than 30 seconds is really a good lead over the second-placed driver, but the rally still has a long way to go. This is particularly true as the legendary ‘Ouninpohja’ special stage still awaits us twice tomorrow – for me the absolute highlight of this weekend. I can hardly wait to finally drive here in a World Rally Car. Today was great for us. We put our foot down, but did not push ourselves right to the very limit. The roads were very rough and difficult, particularly in the afternoon. The risk of getting a puncture was simply too great for an unconditional attack. Picking up points towards the World Championship are obviously the top priority, but I want to try to fulfil my dream of winning the Rally Finland for the first time.”

Andreas Mikkelsen, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #9
“A day of highs, but unfortunately also lows for me. I still have a lot to learn in the World Rally Championship, but particularly at the Rally Finland. I was driving most of today’s stages for the first time in a World Rally Car. Our plan was to master them as quickly as possible and with as little risk as possible. And it nearly worked. I tried to use the experience we gained in the morning on the afternoon’s second loop. For this reason, I particularly enjoyed the 13th special stage, ‘Mökkiperä’. Braking points, gear changes and corner entries were just as I had imagined. Up until then everything was running almost perfectly. Unfortunately a damaged suspension put an end to all that on the next stage. It is a shame, as I had my sights set on a top-five result. However, the team will have the Polo excellently prepared for tomorrow and I will start again under Rally 2 regulations. That is important in order to gain more valuable information.”

Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director
“It doesn’t get any better. Sébastien Ogier produced an irresistible and tactically outstanding performance today. He drove cleverly and conservatively on the morning’s loop, and then won every single stage in the afternoon. He richly deserves to be leading the Rally Finland. However, Andreas Mikkelsen also produced a mature display today. He can be proud of the way he is competing on a par with the top drivers who have greater experience of Finland. Unfortunately he had a problem with the suspension on the penultimate stage of the day and had to retire. However, he will rejoin under Rally 2 regulations tomorrow. Jari-Matti Latvala was also in fine form and bounced back impressively. I am proud of all three.”

And then there was ...

... that one very special stage on the Rally Finland. The 23.66-kilometre “Lankamaa” stage, which the drivers tackled twice on Saturday, ran through the property of rally legend Juha Kankkunen (FIN) for several hundred metres. The three-time winner of the Rally Finland spends every summer on his family farm in Laukaa, where he once learned to drive in a Volkswagen Beetle. “I can practically see the World Rally Cars from the balcony,” said Kankkunen, who took part in the Rally Dakar with Volkswagen in 2005. The Volkswagen drivers paid Kankkunen a visit during Monday’s “Recce”, and allowed the four-time world champion to show them his impressive collection of historic racing cars – including a 1986 Audi Quattro S1.

Hodgetts fastest in storm-hit Snetterton

Stefan Hodgetts (Redditch) continued his excellent recent form during official Renault UK Clio Cup testing at a storm-hit Snetterton 300 Circuit today, Friday, 2nd August, to edge out series leader Josh Files (Norwich) at the top of the timing screens by just 0.017 seconds.
Hodgetts, who goes into rounds 11 and 12 of the season at the Norfolk track this weekend equal fourth in the championship with three wins from the last five races and an unbroken run of five straight top two finishes, posted the best time of the day in changeable conditions during session one – lapping in 2m11.589 seconds (81.22mph).
“I don’t think anyone can take anything from today to be honest”, said the pace-setting KX Racing with Scuderia Vittoria driver, “In the sort of conditions we had, you’ve got championship contenders who don’t want to risk too much, so you don’t get a clear picture.
“It’s nice to be fastest, better than struggling, but the times from today are unrealistic of how it’ll be tomorrow. Josh [Files] and Paul [Rivett] will be up at the front, as will we hopefully. It’ll be the same as usual I’m sure.”
Local hero Files, who resides in nearby Poringland, was a full 0.6 seconds quicker than Team Pyro stable-mate Alex Morgan (Reading) and the best of the Graduate Cup runners. JHR Developments’ Lee Pattison (Liversedge) lapped fourth fastest, only 0.1 seconds shy of Morgan and the quickest of the Masters Cup class contenders.
Ant Whorton-Eales (Lichfield), who achieved his first podium of 2013 last time out at Croft, made it two KX Racing cars in the top five ahead of Westbourne Motorsport’s James Colburn (Worthing) and Total Control Racing’s Rob Smith (Telford).
Scuderia Vittoria’s Josh Wakefield (Colchester), Finesse Motorsport’s Jake Giddings (Wisbech) and the latter’s new team-mate Aaron Williamson (Spalding), who is now running under the Finesse Motorsport with AWR banner, rounded out the top 10.
Heavy rain and lightning – which resulted in localised power failures – hit the track between the day’s two Clio Cup outings, meaning a delayed start to the afternoon run. When the competitors did venture out onto the track, for a shortened 35-minute session, the circuit was very wet and the lead pace at the beginning was almost 15 seconds outside the best from the morning.
Times tumbled dramatically during the closing minutes as the track began to dry more and more with Colburn ending the afternoon outing quickest with a time of 2m18.389 seconds (77.23mph), still almost seven seconds away from Hodgetts’ session one best.
Erstwhile championship leader Paul Rivett (Banstead), who goes into the weekend just three points behind Files, was prevented from setting a representative time due to a broken gear linkage on his Names.co.uk/Stancombe Vehicle Engineering-run Clio.
“It was a bit of a waste of a day for us really, but we’ll be on it tomorrow – and it’s supposed to be dry”, said the three-time champion, “We won both races at Snetterton last year, and qualified at the front, so we know we should be strong.”
Renault UK Clio Cup action resumes today, Saturday, 3rd August, with qualifying taking place at 11.20 and round 11 following at 16.40. On Sunday, 4th August, round 12 is timetabled to commence at 11.10 – please check listings for details of ‘as-live’ coverage of Sunday’s encounter on ITV4 and ITV4 HD.

New Toyota 4Runner

For nearly three decades, the Toyota 4Runner mid-size SUV has been a stalwart for off-roading enthusiasts seeking a SUV with rugged, go-anywhere capability.   Currently In its fifth-generation, 4Runner continues as one of the few fully capable mid-size SUVs, and the redesigned 2014 4Runner receives a rugged new exterior design, and interior refinements that add comfort and convenience without sacrificing its hallmark performance capability and excellent value.

The 4Runner combines rugged body-on-frame construction with comprehensive suspension technology that yields optimal off-road capability with a smooth ride and comfort more often associated with crossovers.  The 2014 4Runner is available in three grades: a well-equipped, value-driven SR5; top-of-the-line Limited, and a Trail grade for those who want maximum off-road capability.  Optional third-row seats on SR5 and Limited allow for up to seven-person capacity.

4Runner owners will have the choice of a rear wheel 4x2, part-time 4x4 or a full-time multi-mode 4x4 with a locking center differential.  All models are equipped with a powerful 4.0-liter, 270-horsepower V6 teamed to a five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission and one of the few vehicles that continues offer a transfer case.

4Runner’s Rugged Exterior Design Projects Its Off-Road Heritage With a Premium Refinement
The refreshed 4Runner features a redesigned front fascia that conveys a more rugged and aggressive appearance.  This includes a muscular front grille, and edgier smoked headlamps for a more forceful look.  The SR5 and Trail grades feature a color-keyed grille insert and front bumper that is surrounded by fog lamps set in sharply cut inlays that extend from the headlamps down to the bumper.

The Trail grade features new color-keyed bumpers and overfenders, and it continues to be distinguished by an aggressive hood scoop and silver painted front and rear bumper accents.  All grades are now standard with a roof rack.

In addition to the distinctive new grille, the premium Limited’s front design stands apart with a chrome-plated grille insert and chrome front bumper that extends to the fog-lamp bezels. The side molding, roof rack and rear bumper are also chrome trimmed.  The headlamps have also changed from halogen to projector beam, with both the headlamps and redesigned rear combination lamps on all 4Runner grades now featuring LED lamps.

Both the SR5 and Trail grades will ride on 17-inch alloy wheels with a new wheel-design for both, while the Limited continues to ride on 20-inch alloy wheels, which are now painted black prior to machining to add contrast.  All grades continue to come standard with a full-size spare.

The 2014 4Runner will be available in eight exterior colors that include new additions: Super White; Attitude Black Metallic; Barcelona Red Metallic; and Nautical Blue Metallic.  They will join carryover colors that include: Blizzard Pearl; Classic Silver Metallic; Magnetic Gray Metallic; and Black.

New Interior Styling Has a refined style with the Comfort expected of a Mid-size SUV
The 4Runner exterior updates are complemented by touches of refinement on the inside.  Both the SR5 and Trail grade add standard Soft Touch door trim, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather shift knob provide a premium feel and atmosphere.

The SR5 receives a new bright and highly visible Optitron instrument panel that houses speedometer, tachometer, voltage, fuel and coolant temperature gauges, plus a multi-information display that offers multiple functions.  An Eco-Driving feedback system allows the driver to monitor fuel consumption in real time.  On 4Runner Trail, an overhead console within easy reach organizes the off-road control switches into one location.  A compass indicator and outside temperature display add functionality.  A manually controlled air conditioning system is standard on SR5 and Trail grades; the Limited features an automatic dual-zone climate-control system.

For second-row passengers, a sculpted front seat-back shape provides additional knee space.  The second-row seats, which include a center armrest, individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps for relaxing passenger comfort.  The 40/20/40 second-row seat configuration also has a one-touch walk-in function, making access to the third row easier. Third-row seating is available on SR5 and Limited grades and features a roomy, supportive seating area.

The SR5 and Trail grade come standard with comfortable fabric-trimmed seating available in Sand Beige, Graphite or Black.  Available SofTex seats offer a soft, rich feel.   New for 2014, the SR5 adds a standard eight-way power driver seat.

The Limited comes standard with a leather-trimmed interior with new ventilated driver and front passenger seats in Sand Beige, Black and a new Redwood color.  Front seats are also heated with eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support and four-way power-adjustable passenger seat.  Both front seats are now standard with memory settings.

Powerful 4.0-liter V6 Helps Take 4Runner Anyplace, Anytime
The 4Runner 4.0-liter V6 generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque.  Dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimizes torque across the engine’s operating range.   Fuel economy ratings rival some crossover SUVs with an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for 4x2 models, and 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway for 4x4.  Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds and all vehicles feature an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness as standard equipment.

4Runner Balances Full Off-Road Capability with Smooth Around-town Handling
A double-wishbone independent front suspension, combined with a variable-flow rack-and-pinion steering, help give the 4Runner precise control on demanding roads.  Coil springs over gas shocks are used at all four wheels for a comfortable ride and controlled handling.  The four-link rear suspension maximizes off-road axle articulation, whileproviding a smooth ride for rear-seat passengers on and off pavement.

The Limited grade comes standard with an X-REAS suspension system that further improves performance, comfort and control.  With X-REAS, 4Runner corners flatter, smoother, and handles choppy pavement more easily.  X-REAS automatically adjusts the damping force of shocks when driving over bumpy surfaces or when cornering.  The system uses a center control absorber to cross-link shocks on opposite corners of the vehicle, substantially reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs.

The 4Runner SR5 and Trail 4x4 models have a two-speed, part-time four-wheel-drive system with neutral position, maximizing fuel efficiency when a 4x4 configuration isn’t needed.  The 4Runner Limited is equipped with a full-time, four-wheel-drive system with a locking center differential and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch.

The A-TRAC traction control system is standard equipment on all 4x4 models.  The system can distribute driving force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, making terrain irregularities and slippery patches virtually transparent to the driver.  An electronic-locking rear differential is standard on the Trail grade.

The Trail grade is designed to maximize off-road performance with superior approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and an array of functional upgrades for the most demanding active outdoor enthusiast.  The Trail grade offers an optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS).  KDSS significantly improves terrain-following ability by dynamically disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more axle travel, and better suspension articulation in slow, difficult terrain.

Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade.  The system helps maintain an appropriate speed to keep the vehicle under control and minimizes the load on drivetrain and suspension components.

With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL regulates engine speed and output (along with braking force), to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable low-speed settings.  This allows the driver to maintain focus on steering over rough level ground or steep grades without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal.

The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system that dials in wheel-slip control to match the terrain.  In loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle’s favor.  On bumpy moguls, or solid rock, wheel slip is minimized and the system acts more like a limited slip differential.  The Mogul setting is for any extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges, uphill or down.

All models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to hold the vehicle stationary before starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.  All 4Runner 4x4 models feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC).  This feature augments the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by helping to hold the vehicle, allowing time for the driver to a target speed with no driver intervention.

Versatility and Convenience Provide Comfort and Utility
An array of convenience features and versatile seating configurations provide the 2014 4Runner with ample passenger comfort and utility.  Fold-flat second-row seats provide a level load floor in the 4Runner, and it is not necessary to remove the headrests to fold the seats flat.  The available third-row seat is split 50/50 and folds flat.  The seats can be folded from the side or at the rear, using separate one-touch levers.  With this arrangement, more cargo space is available without removing seats, and longer items can be conveniently carried.

A Smart Key system featuring keyless entry with push-button start is standard on the Limited grade.  The system allows the driver to unlock or start the vehicle by carrying the keyless remote.  The cargo door window has jam control, like the moonroof and power side windows.

An available pull-out cargo deck is capable of carrying up to 440 pounds to make loading and unloading heavy items easier and to provide seating for tailgating and campsite relaxation.

All 4Runner models come standard with a 120V outlet and two additional 12V outlets.

A front and rear clearance sonar system is standard on Limited models, and a rear-view backup camera is now standard on all 4Runner models.  The system displays in the audio screen, increasing visibility at the rear of the vehicle.

New Audio Systems Include Standard Entune™  Multimedia System
New for 2014 on SR5 and Trail grade 4Runner models is Entune Audio Plus,  which includes Toyota’s Entune multimedia system,  an AM/FM/MP3 CD player with eight speakers, integrated SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio (includes 90-day trial subscription), USB port with iPod connectivity, and Bluetooth hands-free phone capability and music streaming.

Standard on the Limited grade is the new Entune Premium JBL Audio system, which incorporates today’s most in-demand connectivity features.  It includes the Entune multimedia system, a JBL premium sound system with navigation, SiriusXM Satellite Radio (with a 90-day trial subscription), HD Radio with iTunestagging and 15 speakers.  The navigation system includes a large seven-inch monitor.

Entune is a collection of popular mobile applications and data services, with three years of complimentary access.  Once a smart phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth wireless technology or a USB cable, Entune’s features are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition.  Entune offers mobile apps for Bing, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable, and Pandora.  Entune data services include a fuel price guide, sports scores, stocks, traffic and weather.

The “party mode” rear liftgate speaker audio setting feature has been discontinued as the new updated audio system easily allows the user to shift sound balance to the rear liftgate mounted speakers. The pole antenna has been dropped in favor of a new in-glass antenna.

Toyota’s Exclusive Star Safety System, Eight Standard Airbags, Safety Connect
The 4Runner features Toyota’s standard Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.  VSC helps the driver to ensure control by compensating for front and rear wheel slip.  The system uses selective braking and modulated engine output to help keep the vehicle in line with the driver’s steering inputs.  On 4x2 vehicles, the Auto LSD (Limited Slip Differential) system allows for better traction on slippery sections of roadway.  The four-wheel ABS with EBD provides the 4Runner with optimal brake proportioning, regardless of vehicle load.

Eight standard airbags includes front, side-mounted and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side-curtain airbags for the second and third rows.  All 2014 4Runners have active headrests for driver and passenger, and three-point seat belts for all seats.

The 2014 4Runner Limited offers the Safety Connect telematics system.  Available by subscription, with or without the optional navigation system, Safety Connect offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance.  When Safety Connect is ordered, it includes a one-year trial subscription.

In case of either airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision, an Automatic Collision Notification system is designed to automatically call a dedicated response center.  If a response agent cannot communicate with the occupants, the agent can contact the nearest emergency-services provider to dispatch assistance.

Pushing the in-vehicle “SOS” button allows drivers to reach the response center to request help in an emergency as well as for a wide range of roadside assistance needs.  If a 4Runner equipped with Safety Connect is stolen, agents can work with local authorities to help locate and recover the vehicle.

4Runner Includes Toyota Care Complimentary Maintenance
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items.  Additional 60-month warranties cover powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation.  The 4Runner will also come standard with Toyota Careä, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.
