The BMW Concept M4

On 15 August, surrounded by both current and historic BMW models, BMW M tonight offered a first outlook on a high-performance sports car of tomorrow – the BMW Concept M4 Coupe. The car was unveiled at the BMW opening media reception for the iconic annual Pebble Beach/Monterey automobile weekend.

“The BMW Concept M4 Coupe reflects the BMW M philosophy in ideal form: It combines motor racing genes and unrestricted everyday suitability in a highly emotional overall concept. For four generations, the BMW M3 has put motor racing on the road and the BMW Concept M4 Coupe consistently continues to pursue this fundamental idea. The new model designation “M4” refers – like all other BMW M automobiles – to the series on which this concept car is based,” explains Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M Division.

THE DESIGN OF THE NEW BMW CONCEPT M4 COUPE

TheBMW Concept M4 Coupe, finished in the colour “Aurum Dust” exclusively developed for this model, continues with BMW M’s design language – strong in character, emotional and extremely dynamic. From every perspective it is the embodiment of agility, dynamism and superior performance. Large air inlets in the dynamic front, a swift design language in the side and a sporty, low rear give clear visual indication of the car’s tremendous dynamic potential. CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) elements such as the front splitter, the roof, or the rear diffuser underline the optimized lightweight concept down to the smallest detail.

“At BMW M, design is above all an expression of function. Each design element is based on the underlying technical demands of the BMW M high performance concept. Thanks to this authenticity, the design provides a taste of what can be experienced with each model: Power, precise control and superior handling – an unforgettable driving experience on the racetrack as well as on the road” says Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design.

THE FRONT ENDFaceted surfaces, precise contours and distinctive visual depth shape the powerfully expressive front end of the BMW Concept M4 Coupe. The classic “BMW face” with its double kidney and a modern interpretation of the twin round headlamps featuring LED technology provides the car with a distinctive identity, making it recognizable as a BMW M automobile at very first glance. The bonnet with its characteristic power dome symbolises the immense power of the engine that lies beneath it. This dynamic element is further emphasized by a distinctive contour. A further striking feature on the front of the new BMW Concept M4 Coupe is the BMW M double bar kidney grille: The black kidney grille bars imitate the characteristic M double spoke design of the BMW M wheels, the M4 emblem on the kidney grille adding an exclusive accent to the front end.

The powerfully shaped front apron sporting the carbon fibre front splitter immediately catches the eye. The three large air intakes supply the high performance power unit with sufficient cooling air. At the same time, the interplay of surfaces, contours and volume authentically express the car’s supreme potential. The sharply outlined vertical air vents located in the outer section of the side air intakes, the so-called Air Curtain is a design statement of its own. Together with the Air Breather, this feature ensures the aerodynamic closure of the wheel arches and consequently, improved air flow and fuel consumption.

THE SIDE

Viewed from the side, the dynamic impression conveyed by the front end continues. A streamlined, flat silhouette and an athletic body design characterize the BMW Concept M4 Coupe. Typical BMW proportions – a long bonnet, long wheelbase, set-back greenhouse and a short front overhang – create an exceptionally dynamic appearance even when the car is at a standstill. Muscular wheel arches and the powerfully expressive surface language reveal the BMW Concept M4 Coupe’s supreme performance capabilities at very first glance.

The flowing roofline enhances the BMW Concept M4 Coupe’s sporty design with elegant finesse. As a visible high-tech lightweight element, the contoured CFRP roof characterizes the BMW Concept M4 Coupe’s technically innovative design. The CFRP roof reduces weight and ensures a lower centre of gravity, thus facilitating an even sportier driving experience. Here, form and functionality are optimally combined in typical BMW M fashion.

The coupe-like roofline flows into the muscularly designed rear end, which then adopts the contour of the roof. A rear spoiler lip is integrated into the trunk lid for optimum downforce. Thanks to this feature, the BMW Concept M4 Coupe not only has better downforce values, but when viewed from the side, also gains in volume and length, in athletic presence. Below it, the boldly shaped, muscular sill emphasizes the car’s sportive stance on the road.

A conspicuous detail on the car’s side panels is the redesigned M gill. This characteristic M design element constitutes a both sporty and functional statement. On the Concept M4 Coupe, the M gills incorporate the Air Breather, which together with the Air Curtain within the front apron serves to ventilate the wheel arches and facilitate better airflow values. Exclusively designed, bicoloured 20” M light alloys boasting the typical M double spoke design complete the sportive design of the car’s sides. The five filigree double-spokes rims with polished outer surfaces reveal M Carbon ceramic brakes.

THE REAR

The muscular rear end of the BMW Concept M4 Coupe gives visual indication of the car’s supreme power. The entire tail section boasts a sculptural and broad appearance. The large shaded areas beneath the spoiler give the rear end an even flatter and athletic appearance. At the same time, the flat taillights located far to the outside, the wide track and the powerfully flared wheel arches underscore the car’s stable stance on the road. Horizontal lines accentuate the car’s width, lowering the visual centre of gravity even further.

Within the tail section of the BMW Concept M4 Coupe, the design feature of the front apron comprising faceted surfaces is formally replicated and continued further. The interplay of surfaces and precise contours around the optical air vents further accentuates the rear end’s dynamic design. Twin tailpipes are a characteristic M feature on the rear end. The two pairs of carbon fibre tailpipes are encompassed by the sculptural rear apron. A carbon fibre rear diffuser completes the overall aerodynamics package.

Toyo filed unfair trade complain to U.S. Trade Commission

Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas Inc. and its affiliates ) announced today that it filed a formal complaint before the United States International Trade Commission ("ITC") against twenty-two manufacturers, importers, and sellers of passenger and light truck tires (collectively, the "Respondents").
In the complaint, Toyo alleges that Respondents have engaged in unfair trade practices by importing into and/or selling within the United States, tires that infringe eight U.S. design patents held by Toyo.
Toyo, which markets and sells tires under the "Toyo Tires" and "Nitto" brands, has over the years developed and introduced passenger and light truck tires with designs that are both innovative and unique. Toyo is taking this step to protect the company, its customers and associates from unfair competition by enforcing its intellectual property rights.
Toyo requests that the ITC issue exclusion orders that would bar from entry into the United States infringing tires that are imported by or on behalf of Respondents. Toyo also seeks appropriate cease-and-desist orders prohibiting certain activities, including the domestic sale of infringing products that have already been imported.

All New SKODA Yeti

From one Yeti comes two – For the first time ever, the Czech compact-SUV will be available in two variants: as the elegant and stylish ŠKODA Yeti for the town, and an adventurous off-road ŠKODA Yeti. Both design variations of the ŠKODA Yeti feature a new front and rear, new alloy wheels, fresh interiors, new Simply Clever ideas, the highest functionality and extended engine/gear combinations. Both new models are to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and by the end of 2013, both new ŠKODA Yeti variants will have been launched on the first markets.
“The ŠKODA Yeti is one of the most attractive compact SUVs on the market and has far exceeded our sales expectations since its launch four years ago,” says ŠKODA CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. He continues, “With this all-new look and being offered for the first time in two variations, we are establishing new benchmarks. We plan to continue our outstanding development in this rapidly growing vehicle class. The Yeti is another cornerstone of the 2018 growth strategy and will strengthen our international position in the markets.”
Striking appearance – now in two variations
A special highlight is the first time offer of two individual design ranges: ŠKODA’s Compact SUV is now available in an elegant, stylish city look as well as an off-road look for trips in the country. A significant differentiation: the front and rear elements, such as bumpers, underride guard, side mouldings and door sills are either in the body colour or, as with the ŠKODA Yeti outdoor version, remain in black plastic.
The new fronts of both vehicles are now horizontally more accentuated and feature a distinctive grille and redesigned headlights, available as an option for the first time with Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. In keeping with ŠKODA’s new design language, the front headlights are now rectangular and are now located further under the front bumpers.
The Yeti’s new rear has got a new layout. This includes a new form of tailgate with distinctive tail lights now in even more precise moulded C-Design, optionally available with LEDs, and, in line with the new ŠKODA look, two cubist triangular elements alongside the new ŠKODA logo.
The wheel program has been expanded with four newly designed, attractive alloy wheel designs. There is now a wider selection of colours available, including four new metallic finishes – ‘Moon-White’, ‘Jungle-Green’, ‘Metal-Grey’ and ‘Magnetic-Brown’. The latter is a Yeti L&K exclusive.
The new Yeti models have got an all-new fresh interior - with new 3-spoke steering wheels in seven variations, new fabrics and patterns for the seat covers as well as new decorative trims on the dashboard.
The first ŠKODA with rear-view camera
The Yeti is the brand’s first model with Optical Parking Assistant, an optional rear-view camera. This is the first time that the ŠKODA Yeti will feature the latest generation of the automatic parking assistant. The new system enables the Yeti to automatically reverse and parallel park and even pull out.  The new ŠKODA Yeti features the automatic lock and start system ‘KESSY’ for the first time.
The revised ŠKODA Yeti has also received four new Simply Clever solutions. The double-sided floor covering in the boot is new. There is also a detachable LED light in the boot, the vest holder under the driver's seat and the waste container in the side door of the Yeti.
One highlight is, and remains, the ŠKODA Yeti’s VarioFlex rear seat system, offering unique interior versatility. The three rear seats can be individually folded or removed. The outer seats can be shifted across with the middle seat removed. In an instant, the Yeti is transformed from a five to a four seater, making more space for the rear passengers.
There are also the carried-over features like the fold-down backrest of the passenger seat, folding tables on the backs of the front seats, various storage compartments and practical bottle holders. Functionality is a top priority in the boot, featuring among other things, fastening points and fold-down hooks.
Generous space is once again confirmed in the Yeti. In no other compact SUV do the rear passengers have as much headroom as in the ŠKODA Yeti - 1027 millimetres. The boot capacity is at least 405 litres. Taking all the rear seats out increases the volume to a fantastic 1,760 litres.
Seven modern engines; front and all-wheel drive, manual transmission and DSG
There is a selection of four diesel and three petrol engines for the all-new ŠKODA Yeti - all turbocharged and with direct injection. The performance spectrum ranges from the 1.2 TSI with 77 kW and 105 hp to the 2.0 TDI with 125 kW/170 hp. The fifth generation front or all-wheel drive with Haldex coupling is fitted depending on the engine specs. With an automatic transmission, the ŠKODA Yeti exclusively uses the modern six or seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG).
The GreenLine version 1.6 TDI/77kW, with front wheel drive and a manual gearbox, produces CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km. That corresponds to a consumption of 4.6 litres of diesel per 100 km (61 MPG). Additionally, there are threeGreen tec engine variants: the 1.4 TSI/90 kW, 2.0 TDI/103 kW with manual six-speed gearbox, and 1.6 TDI/77 kW with seven-speed DSG. The Green tec package includes the Start-Stop System, brake energy recovery (recuperation) and low rolling resistance tyres.
There is an even larger selection of engine/transmission combinations. The diesel engine 2.0 TDI with 125 kW is available with the fantastic combination of all-wheel drive and automatic six-speed dual clutch transmission. The front-wheel drive Yeti 1.6 TDI 77 kW is now to get an automatic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Safety without compromise
The ŠKODA Yeti is uncompromised in terms of safety, for which the compact SUV received the maximum 5-star rating in the 2009 Euro NCAP Crashtest.
Active safety is increased through ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and ABS (Anti-lock Breaking System) with Break Assist. The front fog lights can be optionally equipped with Corner Function. New bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights increase the visibility of the vehicle and the illumination of the road in the dark. Upon request, there are electronic assistants for up and down hill driving. Other options include the electronic tyre pressure monitoring system.
With electronically controlled all-wheel drive (fifth generation Haldex coupling), and a ground clearance of 180 mm, the compact SUV is ready for any terrain. The electronic differential lock EDL enables a smooth and comfortable start and grip on various road surfaces.
In terms of passive safety, the Yeti boasts up to nine airbags. Isofix points securely fasten child seats. Three-point seat belts in the front with belt tensioners and height adjustment and height-adjustable headrests complete the safety package.
International success story
With the ŠKODA Yeti – the fifth of ŠKODA’s model ranges, the Czech manufacturer celebrated their premier in the compact SUV segment in 2009.  To date a total of 263,200 ŠKODA Yetis have been sold (as of: 30th June, 2013). In 2012 alone, ŠKODA delivered around 87,400 Yetis– an increase of 24.3% over the previous year. And in the first half of 2013, 41,800 Yetis went to customers worldwide. In Europe, with a market share of around 5%, the Yeti is one of the top 10 best-selling A-Class SUVs in the Czech domestic market; it is the clear leader in this segment. There, the Yeti is built in Czech plant in Kvasiny, in Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod plant and, by the end of 2013, in Shanghai, China.
Since its market launch, the ŠKODA Yeti has touched the hearts of SUV enthusiasts, as proven in a survey carried out by the trade magazine ‘Auto Express’, in which the Yeti, among others, was chosen by around 46,000 readers to be the car, with which UK customers were most satisfied.
ŠKODA continues the most comprehensive model campaign in corporate history with the release of two all-new variants of the Yeti at the same time. In 2013 alone, the Czechs will be bringing out eight new or completely revised models and by 2018 ŠKODA plans to increase their global sales to at least 1.5 million vehicles per year.

2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Progressive design, serene day-to-day driving and offroad capability: easily handling various automotive applications, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA impressively reinterprets the compact SUV segment. It effortlessly masters day-to-day driving and is also robust enough for off-road excursions. The 2015 GLA-Class will arrive in U.S. showrooms in Fall of 2014.
The first Mercedes-Benz in the fast-growing compact SUV segment is highly maneuverable around town (length 173.9" x width 71" x height 58.8"), lively on country roads and athletic and efficient on the highway. The highquality appointments, developed with much attention to detail, and the versatile interior clearly position the GLA as a premium compact SUV.
The 2015 GLA-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV to be available with the new-generation permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC, with fully variable torque distribution.
The new GLA rounds off the extensive SUV portfolio of Mercedes-Benz. With five model series (GLA, GLK, ML, GL and G), the company offers the widest range of any European premium manufacturer, and meets all the individual mobility wishes of its customers.
"With the compact GLA we add a fifth attractive SUV variant to the Mercedes-Benz model portfolio in this constantly growing segment. The GLA impresses mainly with its progressive character and agile handling," says Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars. "So I am very confident that the GLA with its fascinating design and high everyday practicality will fill many new customers with enthusiasm for the Mercedes-Benz brand."
As a serene day-to-day companion, the GLA has a flexible and variable interior. The rear seat backrests fold down completely, and the generous luggage compartment is well laid-out and can be loaded without difficulty thanks to the low loading sill and the wide tailgate, which can open automatically as an option. The especially rigid body structure provides a reliable basis for the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 208 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.
The all-new 2015 GLA-Class will celebrate its world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September.
Design: quality and self-assurance
Sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury - this was the focus for the designers, and is the design philosophy of Mercedes-Benz. The goal is to create clear contours and smooth surfaces that communicate both high-tech sophistication as well as emotional appeal. The sensual clarity is reflected in the core design values of Tradition, Emotion and Progression. These are the guiding star, and are accentuated differently depending on the model. Mercedes-Benz creates a bridge between modernity and the avant-garde, between tradition and progression. Each model series has an assigned role and has a very specific character, depending on the attributes on which the design focuses. And yet a Mercedes-Benz is always recognizable as a Mercedes-Benz. Because in addition to incorporating new stylistic developments, and in the interests of keeping tradition alive, the designers draw from a gene-pool of styling features typical of the brand.
"With its striking features, the GLA embodies our progressive thinking and enthralls with its off-road proportions," says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design at Daimler AG. "The clearly defined surfaces convey power and serenity, and we have managed to combine as much emotional appeal as possible with as much clarity as necessary."
As an SUV, the all-new GLA combines the design values of Progression and Tradition, and is the SUV of the future. It is a utility player with hallmark Mercedes-Benz SUV genes, but more youthful, sculptural and full of subtle drama.
The low greenhouse, raised vehicle body and large wheel arches give the GLA great appeal. The clearly defined surfaces are supplemented with sharp lines Daimler Communications, 70546 Stuttgart/Germany Mercedes-Benz - A Daimler Brand that provide definition and precision, varying the sculptured contours of the vehicle body which is sensitively modeled and subtly dramatic.
The prominent and self-assured, upright front end with a central star lends a muscular and superior impression to the GLA. Powerdomes grace the hood as sporty highlights, and the twin-louver grille accentuates the vehicle's width. An impressive front face is ensured by the headlamps and available LED daytime running lamps. This iconic Mercedes-Benz design feature was developed further using tri-functional fiber-optics, and gives the vehicle its characteristic light signature. The front bumper features diamond-pattern grilles in front of the cooling air intakes. The standard fog lamps are integrated into the front bumper. A simulated skid plate and contrasting dark-grey sill panels all-around emphasize the SUV characteristics of the GLA. The panels begin low down at the front bumper and provide protection against stone impact.
The side view of the GLA likewise conveys power and serenity. Following the design philosophy, the "dropping line" emerges at the headlamp and extends to the rear wheel arch. The line of the beltline trim gradually rises from the rear door to the C-pillar. Together the light-catching contour on the curvature and the counter-line to the dropping line at side sill height create an interplay of lines that lends the car flowing power and subtle drama. The side panel has depressions shaped like an excavator's teeth to accentuate the SUV character. Chrome roof rails complete the side profile at the top as standard, and as an optional extra roof rails in high-gloss black are available. The GLA features 18-inch wheels as standard equipment, with 19-inch wheels available as an option.
The muscular shoulders over the rear axle are emphasized even further by the inward taper of the C-pillars. In combination with the divided tail lights, this emphasizes the width of the rear end. Its shape is both dramatic and visually unified.
This impression is heightened by the curved rear window and the sweeping chrome handle between the tail lights. Thanks to the divided tail lights, the cargo opening is conveniently wide. The large roof spoiler is another eyecatching feature. It shares the structure of the rear roof trim and accommodates the third brake light. In the area of the rear bumper trim there are other SUV-specific features such as a robust external loading sill guard and a skid plate available in silver-metallic.
Interior: attractive design features and high quality
The muscular and imposing appearance of the exterior is systematically continued into the interior. This has an especially high-quality feel that is achieved by the contours, choice and combinations of high-grade materials. All trim surfaces are galvanized in silver-shadow for material authenticity, resulting in a metallic finish with a "cool-touch" effect. The impression is one of perfect detail. The heavy emphasis on horizontals, the dynamic design and the highly attractive design features are other high-quality attributes. The same applies to the great precision of joints and gap dimensions.
The dashboard consists of an upper and lower section, allowing surface structures that are different in look and feel. Matte and glossy 3D geometries (graining) create an attractive light effect. The three-dimensional trim section of aluminum or wood lends a new, modern touch to the interior. The available matte satin finish of the wood trim is a further enhancement to the modernity, and makes the surface especially pleasant to the touch.
Five round air vents are integrated into the dashboard. As an exclusive GLA feature, the galvanized bezels around these circular vents echo the SUV-look of the skid plate and side sill panels. The direction of the airflow can be varied by butterfly-shaped inserts.
The large, free-standing display has a high-gloss facing in piano-black and a flush-fitting surround in silver-shadow. This gives the display an especially high-quality look. A 3-spoke steering wheel with 12 function keys and a galvanized chrome clasp is standard equipment. When at rest the needles are in the 6 o'clock position. The needle inlays are always in silver.
The choice of seat upholsteries (standard MB-Tex or optional leather) and color combinations allows plenty of scope for individualization. Sports seats with integrated head restraints are available as part of the optional Interior Package.
The premium quality of the sports seats is emphasized by the opening in the lower section of the head restraint. On the rear of the front seats this space is framed by silver-shadow trim, and can have ambient lighting on request.
Set into a galvanized surround, the controls for the standard power driver’s seat adjustment with memory are arranged on the interior door panels in typical Mercedes style - a unique feature in this segment. The interior door panels are likewise of extremely high quality. The soft, matte surfaces extend right from the beltline to the door pocket. In combination with the equipment packages the door armrests have a high-quality chrome trim strip and standard ambient lighting.
Aerodynamics: goodbye to box-shaped
With the GLA, yet another model series becomes the leader in its segment with respect to aerodynamic efficiency. At 0.66 m2 the frontal area Cd x A, which greatly impacts fuel consumption from around 37 mph, is a top figure.
The good air flow characteristics, which are a major factor in the vehicle's low fuel consumption in everyday conditions, result from numerous aerodynamic optimization measures. These include a low A-pillar step with suitable geometry and aerodynamically optimized exterior mirror housings. The rear end is also streamlined. The measures here include the roof spoiler lip and the aerodynamically shaped tail lights. Rear spoilers at the sides ensure that the airflow breaks off for optimal aerodynamic efficiency. Seals in the front bumper (radiator area incl. around the headlamps) round off the aerodynamic measures.
Extensive underbody paneling, additional paneling in the middle area of the rear axle and an aerodynamically optimized rear silencer followed by a diffuser improve the flow of air beneath the underbody.
Numerous measures have also been taken to reduce wind noise in the GLA. These include a multi-level door sealing concept, additional sealing of the joint between the tailgate and the roof and side seals on the tailgate. Especially rigid window frames prevent the airflow from pulling on the doors at higher speeds, and reduce vibrations. External noise has also been minimized by the low Apillar and exterior mirrors connected to the body by a stem.
Engine and transmission: dynamic claim to leadership
A modern four-cylinder engine with turbocharging and direct injection, as well as an ECO start/stop function as standard, make for superior efficiency. The new GLA-Class also takes the lead in its segment with its dynamic performance figures.
The 2015 GLA250 4MATIC features a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine that generates 208 hp and 258 lb-ft. of torque. The GLA250 4MATIC sprints from zero to 60 mph in only 6.4 seconds, underlining the dynamic claim to leadership of the GLA-Class. It has a top speed of 145 mph. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission which unites comfort and sportiness. The front-wheel drive GLA250 will be available in the U.S. in early 2015.
Suspension: for guaranteed recreational fun
With the new GLA Mercedes-Benz is adding a new member to the successful SUV family. This compact model reinterprets the SUV concept in a new, modern way, because the GLA is less imposing than previous SUVs, and therefore fits perfectly into the day-to-day urban lifestyle. At the same time the optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the robust body structure and the variable interior concept guarantee plenty of recreational enjoyment. Motto: away from the daily routine. Rough terrain - the beach, loose ground, dirt roads, off the beaten path - all of these are no problem for the GLA.
The chassis of the GLA features a McPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension. Three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel manage the incoming forces. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are independent of one another. The wheel carriers and spring control arms are made of aluminum to reduce unsprung masses. In the version with 4MATIC, the rear axle carrier is isolated with rubber bushings for the benefit of ride comfort.
Compared to conventional systems, the electromechanical power steering provides better feedback to the driver and makes an important contribution to the vehicle's overall efficiency, as the servo assistance only requires energy when the vehicle is actually steered. It also allows various steering assistance functions that are initiated by the ESP® control unit. These include countersteering when the vehicle oversteers, steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different levels of grip, reducing the effects of frontwheel drive on the steering and compensation of cross-winds and road camber.
The GLA has an extremely rigid body, and therefore the basis for stable and safe handling characteristics both on and off the road, as well as a high level of NVH comfort. There are additional reinforcements to the B-pillars, front damper domes, side members and underbody.
Even more grip: 4MATIC all-wheel drive
The GLA from Mercedes-Benz is optionally available with a new generation of the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system, featuring fully variable torque distribution. This all-wheel drive system excels with even more grip and outstanding agility while also enhancing driving safety and energy efficiency.
The components of the 4MATIC system include the power take-off to the rear axle that is integrated into the 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, and the rear-axle gear with integrated, electrohydraulically controlled multi-disc clutch. This set-up allows fully variable distribution of the drive torque between front and rear axles. Additional benefits of this design are a lower weight than is available from the competition, and high efficiency.
Confident on light terrain: off-road functions
Models with 4MATIC are equipped with DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) and an off-road transmission mode as standard. DSR is activated by a control button in the center console, and assists the driver on demanding downhill stretches by maintaining a slow, manually selected vehicle speed within the physical limits when negotiating downhill gradients. This is done with the help of the engine and transmission control systems, and by specific braking intervention.
When the off-road transmission mode is selected using the transmission mode switch, the gearshift points and accelerator characteristics are modified so that the requirements for driving on light off-road terrain and especially loose surfaces can be met. In combination with the standard single-disc CD audio system with USB Port, Bluetooth connectivity and HD Radio or optional COMAND system, the head unit can also be switched to an off-road display. The steering angle, the selected off-road transmission mode and a compass are displayed there. The roll angle in degrees, the gradient in percent and activation of Downhill Speed Regulation DSR are also indicated.
Smart safety: advanced assistance systems
Numerous driving assistance systems offer support in the GLA and reduce the driver's workload. Standard features for the SUV include ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection and radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist, which now helps to protect against collisions from a speed of only 4 mph.
This feature combines with DISTRONIC PLUS (part of the Driver Assistance Package) to become COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. This incorporates an additional function: If a danger of collision arises and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124 mph, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 18 mph, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 12 mph.
Established assistance systems, such as Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist are also available for the GLA. PARKTRONIC w/ Park Assist (optional) allows automatic parking in parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.
"Always on": the multimedia systems
The latest multimedia generation deployed in the GLA boasts new functions and a modified graphic color scheme.
Like all models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the GLA comes with the brand’s acclaimed connectivity service mbrace2, providing users with an extensive range of online and concierge services and apps all linking seamlessly to smartphones for use inside and outside the car. By using cloud technology, mbrace2 is always up to date and offers users wide-ranging and flexible access to content.

HCD-14 Genesis Concept can be seen at Pebble Beach

Hyundai’s innovative and tech-laden HCD-14 Genesis Concept, which received international acclaim at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, will again be center stage on the prestigious Concept Lawn at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The HCD-14 Genesis Concept joins a handful of other futuristic concepts from the world’s leading manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

CONCEPT LAWN

The Pebble Beach Concept Lawn provides a highly differentiated staging venue within the Concours d’Elegance judging activities for the weekend. Concours attendees view the special vehicle concepts upon entry and departure from the grounds, giving them ample opportunity to consider future automobile development in the context of its gloried past. In recent years, the concept lawn has taken on special significance as a focal point for some of the most convention-shattering designs and advanced technologies under development.

Concours attendees frequently have the opportunity to interact directly with lead concept designers on the lawn for a vision of the future automobile’s unlimited potential. Every manufacturer’s concept submission is subject to rigorous Concours criteria for its overall design propriety and technological significance. The Concept Lawn configuration limits the total number of concepts to about 20 vehicles, making this a coveted privilege for automotive manufacturers. 2013 also marks the fifth year of Hyundai’s presence at Pebble Beach, frequently showcasing its premium models. This year, Hyundai will host its Genesis and Equus premium sedans on Peter Hay Hill from August 14-18.

“We’re both humbled and excited to represent the HCD-14 Genesis concept as a glimpse into Hyundai’s vision for the future,” said Chris Chapman, chief designer for Hyundai Design North America in southern California. “The HCD-14 speaks powerfully in terms of both premium design trends and advanced driving technologies, making it a perfect fit for the Concept Lawn venue. We’re looking forward to hearing opinions from some of the world’s leading automotive enthusiasts on this ground-breaking concept from Hyundai.”

EVOLUTION OF FLUIDIC SCULPTURE

HCD-14 Genesis conveys an evolution of fluidic sculpture design language with more precision than previous iterations. Detailed craftsmanship quality is conveyed via gemstone-like design surfaces. From the side view silhouette, classic rear-drive sport sedan proportions are conveyed by an extended dash-to-axle length, short overhangs, large-diameter wheels, sharply-tapered greenhouse, and short rear deck. Large wheels were developed from a mix of premium lightweight alloys with carbon fiber surrounding the voided areas of the wheel design.

REAR-HINGED REAR DOOR CABIN ACCESS

Opening the rear door reveals a rear-hinged configuration, with a single, oversized, brushed-aluminum hinge articulating diagonally from the rear door cutline. With both doors open, HCD-14 Genesis has an inviting and commodious cabin ambience. Inside the cabin, a double-cresting-wave center console design carries from the instrument panel through to the rear seats. This design-wave theme further influences the interior door handles and rear headrest hoods. Gauges and driver data are provided via an eclectic fusion of both analog and digital sources, with aviation-derived design cues. The driver-focused cockpit offers an asymmetrical center stack, with critical driving functions separated from passenger comfort functions.

ACTIVE DRIVER SAFETY TECHNOLOGY

While the HCD-14 Genesis exterior design makes a statement all its own, the driver’s environment is where its technological innovation breaks new ground. Ergonomics engineers eliminated the traditional center stack, developing an intuitive driver interface system that allows the HCD-14 driver to better keep his eyes on the road. Freed from traditional design restrictions, designers created a controls layout devoid of intimidating clusters of buttons and knobs. Using state-of-the-art driver eye-tracking and 3-D hand-gesture recognition, HCD-14 Genesis is able to recognize driver commands free from the distractions associated with manual controls. Once a specific feature is selected via eye-tracking, thumb controls or gesture recognition can be used to select navigation, infotainment, audio, HVAC, and even smartphone connectivity functions. This intuitive interface provides the driver with complete control while keeping his eyes safely above the cowl plane, using a windshield heads-up display (HUD) for minimal driving distraction. This proprietary interface represents Hyundai’s vision for future vehicle HMI and sets a new benchmark in active driver safety technology.
