60 years of Corvettes

This beautiful red Vette is from year 1960.
Chevrolet marked its 60th anniversary of the Corvette, an iconic American sports car. The first Corvette went into production in Flint, Mich. on June 30, 1953. Since then, Corvette has become an American icon that continues to offer the best in today’s technology and performance.

“During the past six decades, the Corvette has been woven into the fabric of American culture, as the sports car of choice for movie stars, musicians and astronauts,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “The very best Corvettes represent the state-of-the-art for their eras in terms of design, technology and performance.”
Here are some key facts highlighting 60 years of Corvette history:
The fixed-roof 1963 “split-window” Corvette Sting Ray coupe.
  • Corvette is the world’s longest-running, continuously produced passenger car. The longest-running vehicle of any type is the Chevrolet Suburban.
  • Corvette made its debut as a concept vehicle at the General Motors Autorama in New York City on Jan. 17, 1953. It was such a success that a limited run of 300 production Corvettes began on June 30 of that year.
  • All 1953 models were Polo White with a red interior and they were priced at $3,498. In 2006, the third 1953 Corvette produced sold for a record $1.06 million at auction.
  • Corvette was exclusively available with an inline six-cylinder engine until 1955. That year, the optional V-8 engine was ordered by 90 percent of buyers. The six-cylinder was dropped in 1956. Corvette has been available exclusively with V-8 power since.
  • Corvette was produced only as a convertible for its first 10 years. The fixed-roof 1963 “split-window” Corvette Sting Ray coupe launched the second-generation Corvette.  Sales doubled and it became a year-round car for drivers in colder climates.
  • Approximately 1.56 million Corvettes have been produced since June 30, 1953. The 500,000th Corvette was built in 1977; the 1 millionth was built in 1992, and the 1.5 millionth Corvette rolled off the line in 2009.
  • Corvettes have been produced at three facilities: Flint, Mich. (1953); St. Louis, Mo., (1954-1981); and Bowling Green, Ky. (1981-2014). The change from St. Louis to Bowling Green happened during the production year. The first 1981 Corvette was built in St. Louis, and the last 1981 Corvette was built in Bowling Green.
  • No 1983 Corvettes were sold to the public. The model year was skipped in preparation for the all-new 1984 Corvette, which launched the C4 generation. Forty-four Corvette prototypes were built as 1983 models. Only one remains, and it is on display at the National Corvette Museum, in Bowling Green, Ky.

007's famous submarine-Lotus is for sale

“Pay attention, 007, RM Auctions is about to sell one of my most ingenious creations and we wouldn’t want it to fall into enemy hands”. Well, ‘Q’ might be a little concerned that his incredible Lotus Esprit Series 1 ‘Submarine’ Car is due to be sold at auction, but for millions of movie fans out there, the appearance of this iconic Bond car on the open market represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
No Bond car has ever done anything as outrageous as transform itself into a submarine. Used to incredible effect in the film The Spy Who Loved Me, starring Roger Moore, the white Lotus commonly tops the polls when generations of movie fans are asked to vote on their favourite film cars of all time. Like all the best Bond cars, the Lotus was a veritable war chest of weaponry and gadgetry, all designed to fox and foil the enemy, whilst also helping Bond to another hard-won victory for Queen and country.
The vehicle to be offered by RM Auctions at its forthcoming London sale, 8-9 September, in Battersea Park, is the one and only fully functioning car especially designed and built for the famous underwater sequence seen on screen in the 1977 film. Abundantly authenticated, and known as ‘Wet Nellie’ on the set, it was developed from one of six Esprit body shells used in the making of the film. As the only car to be built into a fully operational, self-propelled ‘submarine’, by Perry Oceanographic, based in Riviera Beach, Florida, it is the vehicle which claimed the most screen time in the film. The driver of the car was Don Griffin, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL and test pilot for Perry, who operated the vehicle utilising its motorised propellers while manoeuvring with levered steering mechanisms. At the time, the car was said to have cost over $100,000 to create (equivalent to nearly a half million dollars today).
Subsequent to filming the underwater scenes in the Bahamas, the vehicle was shipped to Long Island, NY, where it was kept in an unassuming storage unit on a ten year rental, paid in advance. Fate later intervened when, in 1989, the then rent delinquent unit was put up ‘blind’ for public auction. A modest winning bid from an area couple brought surprise and wonder when the blankets were removed to reveal the iconic 007 ‘Submarine’ Car. After positive authentication, the Lotus was shown occasionally – including a stint at the Petersen Automotive Museum – but mostly kept closely under wraps, until now.
Max Girardo, Managing Director, RM Auctions, Europe, says: “We have a great track record in selling incredible and iconic movie cars, and this particular Lotus is certainly up there amongst the most famous cars of all time. Over the years, millions of moviegoers have stared in awe as the Lotus transformed itself into a submarine, and now, perhaps one of them will have an opportunity to own it. Her Majesty’s Secret Service aside, it surely is the ultimate beach accessory!"
RM Auctions sold “the most famous car in the world”, the Aston Martin DB5 used by Sean Connery in the enormously popular Goldfinger and Thunderball movies, for an incredible £2.9 million during its 2010 London sale.

Briggs Cunningham - larger than life sportsman

Chevrolet Cunningham Corvette #3

In the history of competition, few figures have participated in more than one sport at the highest level; even fewer have made history in two. Briggs Swift Cunningham II not only won the America’s Cup, the most cherished prize in yacht racing, but he also brought American sports car racing to the international stage in a grand manner.
You could hardly read a newspaper or magazine in the late ‘50s or early ‘60s without reading about the accomplishments of Briggs S. Cunningham. Briggs was a larger-than-life American Sportsman. He seemed to personally embody all that was great about America in the post-WWII era. No challenge was too big or too daunting.
An uncle took Briggs to his first automobile race just after the end of the First World War. Both the machinery and the competition appealed to him immediately. While attending Yale he had a chance to skipper a yacht. Like auto racing, yacht racing was fiercely competitive and Briggs knew he would have to return to this sport at some point. In 1933 Cunningham along with two of his closest friends, Miles and Sam Collier formed the Automobile Racing Club of America. A decade later the club was renamed the Sports Car Club of America. Not only did it survive, but it grew to be the biggest sports car club in America to this very day.
Born into a wealthy family, Cunningham had the time and resources to pursue his passions. He became a race car builder, an entrant, and an internationally competitive driver for more than twenty five years. Interestingly, he did not start driving in competition until after his mother passed away in 1940, fulfilling a promise he had made to her.
Briggs S. Cunningham in 1952.
The first car he constructed for road racing combined the body of a Mercedes SSK with the chassis and drive train of a Buick Century! This BuMerc, as Cunningham called it, was actually very competitive. It soundly thrashed many of the world’s most expensive and pedigreed cars on more than one occasion. The idea of a light car with a big American engine seemed to have merit.
Determined to put American race cars on the international map, Cunningham decided to enter two Cadillacs in the 1950 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s most prestigious sports car race. One car was a relatively “stock” appearing two-door coupe, the second had its standard body removed and a light weight, aerodynamic, flounder shaped, roadster body installed. While greatly reducing its drag, the new body was less than beautiful. The car was immediately deemed “Le Monstre” by the French. To the amazement of most race fans, the stock bodied car finished a respectable 10th, with “Le Monstre” finishing just one position behind. The attention the American team drew on its first international outing made Cunningham even more determined to win at Le Mans.
Putting his vast financial resources to work, Briggs purchased a Long Island based shop that had constructed several Cadillac powered Fords and Studebakers. These “hybrids” were well built, fast, and they handled. He relocated his team of talented car builders to Palm Beach where they started production of purpose-built sports cars, named Cunnninghams, which would race at Le Mans and other great road racing venues. As the team entered at least two cars in most races, Cunningham assembled a stable of the best racers to drive beside him. While most of the competition towed their race car to the track behind a pick-up truck and ate out of a picnic basket, the Cunningham team had a sophisticated car transporting truck, a catering truck, and all of the amenities that professional teams now consider mandatory.
Cunningham and his team drivers piloted great, bellowing, brute force, sport cars combining light tube frame chassis and aluminum bodies with big powerful American engines. The thundering Cunningham sports cars enjoyed numerous wins in the US and had several top 10 finishes at Le Mans, yet a Cunningham car never did manage to win at Le Mans.
By the end of 1955 the manufacturing operations were closed, but this was far from the end of the Cunningham racing saga. The team simply switched from building cars to purchasing cars, while continuing to carry the team’s American white with blue stripes livery. Over the years, they raced Corvettes, Jaguars, Maseratis, and OSCAs. Their best finish at Le Mans came in 1960 when a Cunningham team Corvette driven by John Fitch and Bob Grossman finished first in the GT class and eighth overall. This was the first ever win by a Corvette at Le Mans and was a feat that was not duplicated by a Corvette for more than 40 years!
By 1958 with his car manufacturing efforts halted, Cunningham found himself with time on his hands. He turned his attention to the new 12 meter sailing yachts that were about to compete for the America’s Cup. Calling on the skills he had acquired while at college, he commissioned the yacht “Columbia” and entered the race. He personally developed several special racing features including a device for smoothing the sails, named a Cunningham of course, and he skippered the yacht himself. And, he won, bringing the America’s Cup back to America.
While Briggs S. Cunningham is no longer with us, several of the cars that he used to make his mark on the international racing world have survived. Thanks to the efforts of Tim McGrane, the Blackhawk Automotive Museum in California will honor Cunningham’s accomplishments with a display of no fewer than six of his historic vehicles. Visitors will have an opportunity to see two of the very rare and handsome Cunningham-built sports cars along with several of the Team Cunningham race cars. The tribute includes:

1952 Cunningham C4R Race Car (2000 Continuation Car) VIN #R5211 (Peter Hosmer Collection)
1953 Cunningham C3 West Palm Beach Comp. Coupe VIN #5206X (Peter Hosmer Collection)
1953 Cunningham C3 Vignale Cabriolet VIN #5225 (Rich Atwell)
1960 Chevrolet Cunningham Corvette #3 team car (Lance Miller Collection)
1961 Jaguar Cunningham E-Type semi-lightweight-Reg No 9023 DU (The Blackhawk Collection)
1963 Jaguar Cunningham E-Type Lightweight- Reg No 5114 WK (The Blackhawk Collection)
“These cars are part of America’s racing history and are known around the world”, explained McGrane. “They are rarely on public display, and all are virtually priceless. The chance to see these cars and visit the America’s Cup activities in San Francisco Bay may well be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Cunningham was an authentic American hero and all of us at The Blackhawk are really pleased to help salute his life and legacy on land and in the water”.
Among Cunningham’s accomplishments are: Winning four US National Road Racing Championships and numerous sport car racing competitions, building his own world class sports cars, fielding one of the most sophisticated sports car racing teams of its era, and winning The America’s Cup! He appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1954, he was inducted into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 1993, the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993, and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2003. Cunningham lived to be 96 and never lost his passion for automobiles and competition.
The Blackhawk Automotive Museum is open every week Wednesday through Sunday. In addition to the Cunningham display, the Museum features a rotating collection of 90 of the world’s most spectacular automobiles in a striking 100,000 square-foot architectural masterpiece designed specifically to showcase these automotive jewels. If you’re an automotive enthusiast and you‘ve not been to the Blackhawk Automotive Museum, you need to add it to your “must do” list.

Jaguar C-X75 supercar prototype showcases future technology

Following the highly successful introduction of the C-X75 supercar to the media for test evaluation in June 2013, Jaguar is releasing a behind-the-scenes film of the car’s development: C-X75 – A hybrid supercar prototype without equal.
The film features contributions from the car’s lead programme engineers and reveals the challenges overcome in developing a vehicle with a 220mph top speed but that is also capable of producing less than 89g of CO2 per kilometre and can even run with zero emissions for up to 60km.
When Jaguar unveiled the C-X75 concept in 2010, it was the beginning of a new chapter in innovation and technological advancement that would see the car evolve from a design study to a fully working prototype in just two years.
In that incredibly short timespan, Jaguar and development partner Williams Advanced Engineering have created an all-wheel drive, plug-in parallel hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with the world's highest specific power engine and Jaguar's first carbon composite monocoque chassis.
Although the decision was taken in 2012 that as a result of the global economic climate the C-X75 would not enter full production, it was clear that it was a powerful showcase for Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in lightweight vehicle construction and the ideal test-bed for the company’s innovative research into high-performance, low-emission powertrains.
The great achievements in the development of C-X75 prototypes – including cutting-edge hybrid technologies, carbon composite materials and advanced design solutions pioneered in association with Williams Advanced Engineering – will be utilised in other areas of research and development, innovative future products and next-generation engineering for the Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

Highest power and torque density
The C-X75 has a combined power output in excess of 850bhp and 1000Nm of torque, thanks to its state-of-the-art, Formula 1-inspired, 1.6-litre dual-boosted (turbocharged and supercharged) four-cylinder powerplant which generates 502bhp at 10,000 rpm.
It is allied to the highest torque and power density electric motors in production, which generate a further 390 horsepower. The battery pack in the C-X75 is the highest continuously rated power PHEV pack in the world, capable of delivering more than 300kW over the full state of the charge window.
The C-X75 can sprint from 0-100mph in less than six seconds, thanks to its advanced 7-speed automated manual transmission that allows gearshifts in under 200 milliseconds. The very first C-X75 prototype exceeded 200mph in testing with ease, and the car has a theoretical maximum velocity of 220mph.
The car's deployable aerofoil and underfloor aerodynamics create more than 200kg of downforce at 200mph, and active systems enhance its high-speed stability.
Ultra low emissions and pure electric mode
Thanks to the most extreme PHEV specification of any mobile battery in development, the C-X75 will also run for 60km in pure electric vehicle mode and its CO2 emissions fall below 89g/km.
The C-X75 project allows Jaguar to stake an even stronger claim as the UK's most significant investor in innovative technology. The results of the C-X75 programme, in particular in advanced powertrain technologies and lightweight composites, demonstrate Jaguar's technical leadership at the very cutting-edge of automotive development and manufacturing.

Infiniti G50 owns a lot to its concept-car forebears

Essence, Etherea, Emerg-E: three outstanding concept cars that over the past four years have helped define the seductive and individual appeal of Infiniti, the luxury performance brand from Japan.
And all cars without which the latest Infiniti, the all-new mid-size Q50 premium saloon, could not exist.
From its dynamic headlight shape to its crescent-cut C-pillar and purposeful sporting stance, the Infiniti Q50 embodies many of the most acclaimed design cues from its concept-car forebears in a spacious four-door body.
“The Q50 has Infiniti design DNArunning through it,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director. “A concept car to us is far more than a motor show indulgence. It is the canvas on which we paint our production car dreams. Now with the Q50 we see those dreams become real.”
Infiniti design DNA is symbolised by design that is inviting, emotional and born of inspiration from both the human and natural worlds, elements perfectly captured by the new Infiniti Q50. But it is not only the Q50’s exterior design that has been influenced by the Infiniti concept car trilogy – the interior too has benefited from designs and materials from Essence, Etherea and Emerg-E.
“Concept cars make the ideal test bed for the craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology that no Infiniti would be complete without,” added Alfonso Albaisa. “The materials and designs explored in the concept cars have had a big impact on the Q50, and are a large part of the reason the interior is so special.”
Painstaking attention to detail and high quality finish are further examples of the influence the concept trilogy have wrought on the Q50. For example, the Q50’s body brings not just a flowing new elegance to the class but construction techniques so precise that panel fit is among the best available.
FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY
Six ways in which Infiniti’s famous concept car trilogy influenced the Q50
Headlights (Etherea, 2011)
The Q50’s distinctive headlights have changed little since they first previewed on Etherea. With that concept as with the Q50, the lights are very much the car’s “eyes”. Alfonso Albaisa,Infiniti Executive Design Director, says: “The lights allow us to define the Infiniti face more clearly than ever, providing a unique visual signature, day or night.” The light clusters incorporate daytime running lights formed out of a crescent of LEDs, a motif mirrored at the back where the lights are tautly stretched around the car in a way reminiscent of Essence.
Crescent-cut C-pillar (Essence, 2009)
One of Essence’s most distinctive design cues, the crescent-cut C-pillar is used on the Q50 in its purest and most powerful form yet, injecting dynamism into the profile and ensuring the mid-size saloon will always be instantly recognisable. Alfonso Albaisasays: “Since Essence we have known this design of C-pillar was going to play an important role in future Infiniti production cars.”
Three-dimensional double-arch grille (Essence 2009 and Emerg-E, 2012)
The Infiniti double-arch grille – the top span representing the profile of a typical Japanese bridge, the lower span its reflection in the water – has long been an important part of the Infiniti “face”. For the Q50, this grille takes on a more 3-dimensional look with more gravity and depth following the lead set by the design of the Essence concept with its distinctive, highly crafted steel mesh finish. The Q50’s appearance is further strengthened by the grille visually connecting to the base of the A-pillars.
Deep body section (Essence, 2009)
With its deep and steep body section the new Infiniti Q50 has some of the most complex surfaces of any car in its class. It is the result of inheriting design influences successfully advanced with Essence, whose wave-like body sections make the big luxury coupe’s styling so dramatically advanced and effective. For the Q50 the results are just as effective, with the car benefiting from particularly powerful shoulders.
Asymmetrical cabin layout (Essence, 2009, and Emerg-E, 2012)
A driver focus in the cabin is an important part of any Infiniti – as is a welcoming and relaxing front passenger compartment. Essence, and later Emerg-E, managed to achieve both in the same car with a novel Yin-Yang approach, and it is this which the Infiniti Q50 brings into the showroom in production form. The result is an asymmetrical front compartment of two distinct areas, delineated by a line that curves elegantly across the centre console.
Interior finishes (Essence, Etherea and Emerg-E)
Modern interpretations of Japan’s rich arts and crafts tradition are part of the appeal of Infiniti concept cars. They are far more to Infiniti than mere decoration, however. They are integral to who Infiniti is and what it stands for. As such many have a direct influence on the Q50, such as the aluminium inlays whose textures are based on intricate woven patterns.
About the Infiniti Q50
The Infiniti Q50 is the newest and most individual entrant in the mid-size premium class to compete against rivals such as the Audi A4 and BMW Three Series. Designed to appeal to both the heart and the head, the Infiniti Q50 marries the brand’s flowing, concept-car design themes with a welcoming cabin inspired by both high technology and traditional craftsmanship. The four-door, rear- or four-wheel drive saloon is available with a choice of two low CO2, high-performance engines: a 170PS, 400Nm 2.2-litre diesel (115g/km and 4.5 l/100km, 63mpg*), and a 360PS 3.5-litre hybrid (140g/km and 6.0 l/100km, 47mpg*). Depending on market, the Infiniti Q50 goes on sale from autumn 2013.

Princess Di's Audi and other celebrity cars auctioned

Princess Diana's 1994 Audi cabriolet is for sale.
A 1994 Audi cabriolet 2.3 E once owned by Diana, Princess of Wales, will be auctioned by COYS at their traditional Blenheim Palace sale this Saturday 29th June.
This Audi was the family car in which Diana, Princess of Wales was photographed in a number of occasions driving Their Royal Highnesses Prince William and Prince Harry in 1994.
The car is in immaculate condition, finished in metallic Gomera green paint work with the original light beige hide interior, and has only 21,000 miles on the clock. It is estimated at £20,000 to £25,000.
This Mini belonged in its heyday to Brian Epstein and
 later to George Harrison's brother.
The sale will also feature former Beatles manager Brian Epstein’s 1965 Austin Mini Cooper Radford. The car may be the only unrestored example with Beatles connections and quite possibly the car that started it all.
After Epstein’s ownership, the Mini passed on to George Harrison’s brother, Peter Harrison, who kept the car until the December 1971, suggesting that the Beatles most certainly came into contact with the car. It is estimated at £18,000 to £22,000.
Also on offer is a 1965 AC Cobra 289 MK III that belonged to the world famous sixties personality Tara Browne, heir to the vast Guinness brewery fortune.
Tara Browne was the Guinness heir. He got this
Cobra shortly before his tragic death.
Browne received this Cobra on the 11th November 1965 and commissioned it to be turned into a work of art by Dudley Edwards, one of the most important artists internationally of the 1960’s pop-art scene.
Prior to Browne’s tragic accident and death the AC Cobra had been placed on display as Art on Robert Fraser’s Gallery on Duke Street in St James’. The car has been property of the current vendor for the last 4 decades as part of a private collection in Southern England, receiving comprehensive servicing and maintenance work. This AC Cobra is estimated at £300,000 to £350,000.
Chris Routledge, Managing Director of COYS, said: “The Blenheim sale has attracted some very high profile cars and presents an extraordinary opportunity for collectors to own significant pieces of Royal history, the Beatles past or the psychedelic movement of the 60’s.“

Mazda3 Receives Complete Redesign

The all-new 2014 Mazda3 compact five-door was revealed to the world today during an event in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. After weeks of media speculation and numerous "leaked" images of enthusiast renderings, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) pulled the sheet off the highly-anticipated redesign and confirmed the car will be on sale this fall. The all-new Mazda3 is engineered with the full complement of Skyactiv 1 technologies - a proprietary suite of fuel-efficient, performance-driven components and manufacturing philosophies - as well as the handsome styling of the KODO design language. Other launch events also were held in Melbourne, Istanbul, St. Petersburg and London to debut the new vehicle, as well as celebrate the 10th year of Mazda3 production.
"With more than 3.5 million vehicles sold globally, the Mazda3 is the brand's best-selling and most recognizable name plate, and its redesign for 2014 shows just how much attention to detail and care we put into this important vehicle," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. "Skyactiv technology and KODO have performed as advertised and received critical acclaim, with even more technologies and materials to be introduced with the 2014 Mazda3. On the heels of the launch of the 2013 CX-5 compact crossover SUV last fall and the 2014 Mazda6 early this year, this is an exciting time for Mazda, and we're only getting started."
Lower and leaner than its predecessor, this third generation Mazda3 shares almost nothing with its older siblings other than a name. All new from the ground up, the 2014 Mazda3 sits on a wheelbase of 106.3 inches, which is 2.4 inches longer than the previous generation, yet the five-door is 1.8 inches shorter in length at 175.6 inches. With a height of 57.3 inches and a width of 70.7 inches, the Mazda3 reduces its ceiling by 0.6 inches and gains 1.6 inches in the hips while retaining similar headroom space and offering rear legroom at 35.8 inches. The rear seatbacks are nearly 2.0 inches taller for added passenger comfort. Front and rear shoulder room also has increased to 57.2 and 54.4 inches, respectively. This efficient use of space is wrapped in the increasingly striking dimensions of KODO, Mazda's "Soul of Motion" approach to designs that exude emotional proportions and refined strength.
Looks
Whether equipped with the standard 16-inch full-cover steel wheels or higher trim-equipped 16-inch and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, each set expresses dynamic motion from hub to rim. The Mazda3's cab rearward posture and raked profile further emphasize agility and speed.
From the dynamic signature wing of the five-point grille to the expansive sheet metal cresting over sleekly slanted headlamps, from the wide-stance muscular fenders to the taut character lines flowing from panel to panel, sculpting into a chiseled rear featuring provoking taillights, KODO begets the Mazda3 a presence unlike any other. Yet such style is not without purpose as the five-door and sedan models achieve best-in-class coefficient of drag (Cd) at 0.275 and 0.255, respectively, when equipped with i-ELOOP and an active grille shutter. A new-to-Mazda feature, an active grille shutter is mounted in front of the radiator and automatically opens and closes in accordance with driving conditions to improve aerodynamic performance while contributing to real-world gains in fuel economy.
To be available in eight colors, including the premium metallic finish Soul Red Metallic, two all-new Mazda hues are introduced with Titanium Flash Mica and Deep Crystal Blue Mica.
The interior is no less impressive, starting with the driver-oriented cockpit. The pedals have been laid out symmetrically to the left and right of the driver's center-line with a hinged organ-type accelerator pedal as standard for added safety and comfort. Designed not only to appeal to the senses, each control and function also is specifically placed with intuitive utility in mind. The less time spent focusing on adjusting knobs and tapping touch-screen commands, the more time a driver is engaged with the actual act of driving, being alert to what is on the road ahead and, therefore, being able to react quickly, accurately and safely.
For added precision, the base of the A-pillars have been repositioned 3.9 inches rearward to afford greater range of vision for both the driver and front passenger. The outside mirrors also are mounted onto the doors instead of the base of the A-pillar to expand the scope of visibility when looking over mirrors from the driver's seat.
All-new for Mazda vehicles and being launched with the 2014 Mazda3 will be a next-generation human-machine interface (HMI) system. Based on the heads-up cockpit concept, the new HMI system aims to help drivers maintain proper posture, concentrate on the road and drive more safely, even while handling larger amounts of information. The information used is divided into groups, and an innovative screen layout is employed to let the driver safely balance the primary job of driving with other peripheral information.
The 2014 Mazda3 also is the first vehicle to feature Mazda's all-new Active Driving Display, a clear pop-up panel that displays vehicle speed, navigation directions and other important driving information, and is vertically mounted behind the meter hood. This feature not only places necessary information comfortably in the driver's line-of-sight but also directs the display beyond the instrument panel, more in line with where a driver's eyes are naturally focused. The Active Driving Display panel will automatically fold back into a hidden position when the ignition is shut off.
The redesigned meter cluster features a centrally positioned analog gauge flanked by a pair of wing-shaped digital displays. The dial face for the center gauge is characterized by three-dimensional metallic numerals, evidence of the design teams' attentiveness to detail, while its red-ring border pulses as soon as the driver's door is opened, a nod to the vehicle's inescapable sporty DNA. From the gauge clusters extends a decorative dash panel finished in satin chrome with piano black trim pieces adorning select areas of the center console and front door inserts.
The seat architecture has been redesigned with added focus on comfort and space, while at the same time reducing weight. For example, the front seat backs were further sculpted to provide rear seat passengers more knee room than the previous generation Mazda3, and shoulder room for all passengers increased as well. Additionally, the driver's seat cushion was made larger, while still optimizing the seat back to create a more natural seating position with ample lateral support, a welcome adjustment for those prone to long drives.
Available in cloth (Black, Sand), leatherette (Black) and leather (Black, Almond) seat materials, the multitude of exterior and interior color combinations and accents further showcases the attention made to the finer touch points and to the varying degree of consumer preferences.
Stay Connected While On the Go
Mazda's infotainment system receives its own sort of overhaul as well. With the increasing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers, lifestyles, and subsequently driving habits, have changed. To ensure that consumers can continue to be connected in real time with their online community regardless of where they are, Mazda has developed is new operating system to be intuitive and less distracting, which leads to an overall safer and more pleasurable driving experience.
The new operating system connects via Bluetooth® to a smartphone and can easily be updated to ensure users always have access to the latest features and services without the need to swap out hardware. In addition to the current music access points via standard AM/FM radio, CD and USB/auxiliary port connections and premium content such as Sirius Satellite Radio, new features such as internet-based apps Aha by HARMAN will be available. An optional Bose premium audio system with Centerpoint 2 virtual surround sound playback will bring the harmonies and vocals to life for even the most discerning of audiophiles.
The system also can read email and short messages aloud while the vehicle is in motion using text-to-voice technology. Short Message Service (SMS) messages can be received and shown on the touch screen monitor. The system can then articulate the messages as well as allow users to send replies using fixed phrases. A new speech recognition system also allows users to repeat and shuffle audio tracks, as well as search and select folders. When connected with a smartphone, Twitter® and Facebook updates can be read by the system with audio responses available using the Shout function. The system also allows users to search the internet for locations and map directions. An SD card-based navigation system is optional.
Skyactiv
The long relationship between Mazda, the brand, and Zoom-Zoom, the anthem, is no secret. Jinba Ittai, the oneness between car and driver, is a long-standing brand philosophy, an essence, which is built into every Mazda ever engineered - whether for leisurely drives within the cul-de-sac community or hot laps around a track. With the Mazda3, a vehicle that is sold in more than 120 countries and accounts for 30 percent of the company's annual global sales, this connection is even more important and made even more precise.
For the North American market, the 2014 Mazda3 will be offered with two engine choices: the currently-offered Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine and a new Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine, as fitted to the CX-5 and 2014 Mazda6. Globally, the Mazda3 offers the widest Skyactiv powertrain line-up in order to meet local market demands, and will be available with Skyactiv-G 1.5- to 2.5-liter-sized gasoline engines, a 2.2-liter clean diesel engine and as a hybrid electric vehicle (Japan only).
Both engines feature a new high-tumble-port 4-2-1 exhaust system that increases engine output. The Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter produces 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. As compared to the outgoing MZR 2.5-liter engine, the torque output on the 2.5-liter engine at low- to mid-range speeds is increased by 10 to 15 percent, and its weight is reduced by 10 percent. The 2.5-liter produces a peak of 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm, both figures are increases of more than 10 percent over the MZR engine.
The 2014 Mazda3 will be available with a choice of the Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual and Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmissions. Manual transmission offers the short, crisp shift pattern reminiscent of the MX-5 Miata. automatic transmission achieves a direct shift feel and quick gear changes that contribute to quick acceleration, while maximizing the best features of a direct-shift gearbox and a conventional torque-converter system.
Mazda's unique i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system employs a capacitor to store electricity generated when the vehicle decelerates. Brake energy regeneration systems improve fuel economy by reducing the inherent parasitic drag of the alternator when possible, to maximize the efficiency of the vehicle under all modes of operation. Unlike other battery-based systems, i-ELOOP, its name derived from "Intelligent Energy Loop," is the world's first capacitor-based system to power all of a vehicle's electrical components.
The added combination of the Skyactiv-Body and Skyactiv-Chassis enhances the Jinba Ittai spirit by offering high-performance, lightweight materials for added strength and safety. Carefully engineered load-transfer ensures a firm grip on the road that the driver can sense. Body provides increased rigidity of 30 percent compared to the previous model while reducing weight as well.
Although variable from market to market, the expanded use of high tensile-strength steel, and the complete reevaluation of more than 300 separate components, has led to significant weight savings.
Straight line stability, tire grip and ride comfort have been greatly improved by tuning the suspension system's springs, dampers and stabilizers. Mazda's new mechatronic column-type electric power assist steering system is compact and lightweight, with a gearing ratio of 14.0:1. The brake response also was improved to be even more responsive, allowing for excellent vehicle control and feel as well as a braking distance amongst the best in the segment. Such improvements also reduce rolling resistance, all improving fuel economy.
A new lightweight material that exhibits a high level of noise absorption is introduced on the dash insulator and floor mats, and insulating material also is positioned for maximum effectiveness behind the instrument panel. These measures achieve a level of cabin quietness that is highly competitive within the compact car class, and fully comparable in a class-above vehicle.
Safety Features Without Compare
The 2014 Mazda3 introduces several all-new safety systems under the umbrella known as i-Activsense. These technologies use sensing devices such as milliwave radars and cameras to support the driver in recognizing hazards, avoiding collisions and minimizing damage, should accidents occur. While these systems will not eliminate accidents, their intent is to minimize them and reduce the severity of a crash.
The features available under i-Activsense for North America are:
  • High Beam Control (HBC) - The system automatically switches the headlamps between high and low beams.
  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) - This safety confirmation system detects objects located in blind-spot areas to the sides and rear of the vehicle and issues a visual alert within the outside mirrors for the driver to see. Should the turn signal be on for the direction in which the "blind" object is located, audible beeps will alert the driver.
  • Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) - This system monitors the lane markings on the road and issues a warning to the driver when it predicts that the vehicle is going to depart from its lane.
  • Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) - This system monitors the vehicle ahead and issues both audible and visual alerts to help the driver take evasive action when it determines a high risk of collision to exist. FOW operates when traveling between speeds of 9 and 92 mph.
  • Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) - When traveling at speeds of less than 19 mph, SCBS helps prevent or minimize a collision with a vehicle. Should the imbedded laser sensor detect an object, and the system calculates there may be a high risk for collision, the brake pedal travel is reduced in order to hasten braking. Should the driver fail to perform an avoidance maneuver, the system will activate an automatic braking function.
  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) - The system determines the difference in speed and distance to the vehicle in front and will automatically adjust the cruising speed in order to maintain a safe distance.
Mazda Proactive Safety is Mazda's development concept, and it aims to help the driver avoid dangerous situations before they occur by minimizing the risks that can lead to an accident. Additionally, it maximizes the range of conditions in which the vehicle can be driven safely and with peace of mind.
The Skyactiv-Body efficiently absorbs impact energy from any direction and minimizes the chance of the cabin structure being compromised. Other standard safety features on the 2014 Mazda3 include six airbags (front, side and full side-curtain), whiplash-reducing front headrests, power-assisted ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, daytime running lights, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), a Traction Control System (TCS), a collapsible steering column (following air bag deployment), a trunk entrapment release system, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), three-point safety belts for all seating positions, front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters as well as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH).
