Mazda MX-5 named Britain's Most Reliable Sportscar

The Mazda MX-5 has been named as ‘Britain’s most reliable new sportscar’ in the 2013 Which? Car Survey – the biggest survey of car satisfaction and reliability conducted in the UK.
Achieving a reliability score of 97.4 percent (for models up to three years old) and 91.1 percent (models over three years old) the Mazda MX-5 beat a host of rivals to claim first and second places in the age-related categories – while earning high praise from the Which? editorial team.
“For a sportscar that will last for years and won’t cost a fortune in repairs, head to your local Mazda garage.  The MX-5 has the lowest number of faults and no annual repair costs in the first three years,” states Which?
For MX-5 models between 1998-2005 the magazine comments: “The Mazda MX-5 is the automotive equivalent of a double espresso.  Near-telepathic steering and handling make other cars (even some sportscars) feel woolly and dull by comparison.  You can pick-up a decent used MX-5 for just £1,500.  We suggest you do.”
Demonstrating the excellent reliability for which the Mazda brand is famed, other Mazda models also scored well in the Which? survey.  Mazda3 was rated as 91.9 percent reliable and topped the table for medium cars (over three years old), generating the comment: “The Mazda3 costs owners less in annual repair bills than the majority of new cars that are still within their three-year warranty period.”
The Mazda6 Estate placed second in the Estate cars (up to three years old) category scoring 97.2 percent, while the Mazda2 ranked fifth among Superminis with a 96.4 percent score.
Overall, the Mazda brand was ranked by the Which? team as equal-ninth out of 31 alongside Volkswagen in its Best Car Brands section, which merges the staff’s road-test opinions with the Car Survey results. The magazine stated: “It looks like you can’t go wrong if you buy a new Mazda.”
Jeremy Thomson, Mazda UK managing director, commented: “The 2013 Which? Car Survey findings are a wonderful endorsement of our products and our brand.  I’m sure that our all-new Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5 compact SUV with their innovative SKYACTIV technology will claim top rankings in future Which? surveys.  Meanwhile the iconic MX-5 is still winning friends more than two decades after its introduction, recently being nominated as ‘Best Convertible‘ by Carsite.co.uk and earning the title ‘Most Popular Roadster‘ in the Honest John Awards earlier this year.“
Compiled annually, the 2013 Which? Car Survey was based on information supplied by more than 47,000 drivers relating to over 57,000 cars.

Limited Edition Red Bull Mégane Renaultsport

The Mégane Renaultsport is already hailed by many as the ultimate hot hatch, so the arrival of a new Formula One inspired and Red Bull Racing-branded limited edition is set to ensure it flies even more than the standard model.
The Formula 1 World Championship winning partners have again joined forces by making just 30 Mégane Renaultsport Red Bull Racing RB8s available to the UK market, priced at £28,245 on-the-road.
The flagship Mégane Renaultsport takes its inspiration from Red Bull Racing’s Formula 1 identity, featuring an exclusive Twilight Blue finish with Platinum Grey detail.
Packed with cutting edge technology, the only thing missing is wings. The striking hot hatch includes Recaro seats, R-Link Multimedia system and TomTom Live navigation system, Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres, plus the latest on-board Renaultsport Monitor v2.0.
The exciting opportunity to own just one of 30 destined for the UK follows hot on the heels of the first images and details of Renault’s 2014 Formula One engine, the 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged Energy F1-2014, unveiled at the Paris Air Show.
Renault and Red Bull Racing this year celebrated their third Formula 1 Constructors’ world title and the new Mégane looks another sure-fire winner.
The exclusive Twilight Blue finish takes its inspiration directly from the race team’s famous colours, while Red Bull Racing graphics at the rear and on the sides are further tell-tale hallmarks of this limited edition car. In addition to its sporty credentials, it stands out as particularly elegant, too, thanks to exterior Platinum details (F1 blade, door handles, door mirror housing and rear lip spoiler) which contrast with the striking Twilight Blue paintwork. Last but not least, a monochrome laurel on the rear side windows celebrates the team’s 2012 Constructors’ world title.
Inside, the new limited edition version comes with a number of exclusive features, including Red Bull Racing branding on the numbered aluminium kickplates and carpet mats. The same logo appears on the headrests of the Recaro front seats which are trimmed in a new leather/fabric upholstery.
Looking to break records? Mégane Renaultsport Red Bull Racing RB8 is shod as standard with the same Cup chassis and Bridgestone tyres that helped Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy to establish a new lap record for the Nürburgring. These high-performance tyres are fitted to exclusive 19-inch gloss black ‘Steev’ alloy wheels with platinum coloured rims.
Advanced on-board technology : Renault R-Link and Renaultsport Monitor v2.0

  • Data can be saved on a USB stick
  • Plus the usual real-time access to power output data, 0-62 mph times, G-Force diagram, etc.
A Mégane Renaultsport first and foremost
The limited edition version packs the same fundamental features as Mégane Renaultsport 265 Cup, including stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bar, a limited slip differential, grooved discs with red Brembo front callipers and the potent two-litre-turbocharged 265hp engine with Stop&Start and trademark Renaultsport technologies.

New 2013 Renault Clio Cup

With the New Clio Cup, Renault rewrites the rules in hot hatch development.  With nearly 50 years experience in motorsport, Renault Sport Technologies has drawn on its experience to create the latest high performance competition car.
Since the launch of the R8 Gordini Cup in 1966, Renaultsport has been ever-present on the racetracks of Europe and the rest of the world. The four generations of the Clio Cup have earned recognition for their performance, reliability and accessibility.
Replacing the model used competitively since 2006, the new Clio Cup has benefited from all the assets of the Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo EDC, starting with its chassis. Reinforced by a welded roll cage, the monocoque chassis delivers increased safety and is stronger too. Enhanced by 17-inch rims, the design of the new Clio Cup is complemented by aerodynamics that make it handle even better on the track.
Renault Sport Technologies’ engineers have put all their knowledge into the new 1.6-litre, direct-injection, turbo engine, which produces 220hp and a constant torque of 270Nm.  It is hooked up to a six-speed, sequential gearbox that enables gear shifts to be made in just 100 milliseconds. Steering-wheel paddle shifts are available as an option, along with the classic gearstick. UK competition will follow the Eurocup series in having the electronic paddle shift gear-change as standard.
The track-hugging new Clio Cup also comes with adjustable shock absorbers. Combined with adjustable axles, this innovative feature allows teams to set the new Clio Cup up to suit different track conditions and driving styles.  Two tyres have been developed in collaboration with Michelin and Dunlop. The UK series will remain on Dunlop tyres for the 2014 season.
The braking is, as with all Renault Sport Technologies cars, a particular strong point. The new Clio Cup has many strengths, including 320mm ventilated discs, gripped by powerful 4-piston callipers.
Every attention has been lavished on the onboard electronics. The engine and gearbox are monitored by a unique ECU that can be accessed only by Renault Sport Technologies’ engineers. Incorporated into an ergonomic and highly functional dashboard, all the driver controls and displays are within fingertip reach. Meanwhile, performance is analysed and driver efficiency enhanced by a data acquisition system that uses the same software as the Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5.
The new Clio Cup is manufactured and assembled at the Alpine factory in Dieppe. With its bench-tested and race-sealed engine, the car is delivered ready-to-race.
THE LATEST SUCCESSOR TO THE R8 GORDINI
Renault revolutionised circuit racing when it created the saloon racing series nearly half a century ago.  Since the birth of the R8 Gordini, Renault has developed expertise that has brought it unrivalled international success.
The R8 Gordini first made its mark in rallying, chalking up three wins in the Tour de Corse before moving on to acquire legendary status on the track. Launched in 1966, thanks to a partnership between Renault and the magazine Moteurs, the first R8 Gordini made motorsport more accessible, opening it right up to a new generation of drivers, some of whom won plaudits if not fame while others went on to become great champions of the sport.
The R8 handed the baton on to the R12 on 19 July 1970, a day that has gone down in history as Jour G (“G Day”), a mass gathering of 15,000 Gordini disciples held at the Paul Ricard track, now considered a precursor to the World Series by Renault. As new models appeared, so Renault’s development series evolved, while staying faithful to two key principles: respect for a level playing field and a desire to keep racing costs down.
Launched in 2001, the first version of the Clio Cup – based on the famous Clio 16V – took its place in this noble lineage. Following a brief interlude between 1997 and 2000, when the Mégane 16v put in an appearance, the Clio took over for the next two generations. Having made its entrance in 2006, the version that continues to pay its respects to its ancestors today stands out for its carefully designed aerodynamics and modern onboard electronics.
With the arrival of the new Clio Cup in 2013, Renault Sport Technologies has revamped the class with a brand new product that marks a return to the turbo engine, which was sidelined in the late 1980s. Offering an even better price/performance ratio, it opens the door to another generation of hungry young drivers.
DESIGN AND AERODYNAMICS
Specially created to make an impact, the design of the new Clio breaks fresh ground. The first car to fully express the rebirth of the Renault style under Laurens van den Acker, the new Clio boasts naturally powerful streamlining, a lower ride height than its predecessor and longer wheelbase, features that all combine to make the competition version even more combative.
The new Clio Cup also takes on some of the features specific to the Renaultsport 200 Turbo EDC: the Formula One-style front blade, rear diffuser, front and rear spoilers, front and rear bumpers, LED lights and twin-exhaust tailpipes, to name but a few. Make no mistake, the new Clio Cup has got Renaultsport pedigree running through its veins.
Thanks to computational fluid dynamics and some cutting-edge work in the wind tunnel, Renault Sport Technologies’ engineers have significantly increased downforce. In conjunction with the front air extractors, the rear diffuser, which incorporates the twin-exhaust tailpipes, gives the car even more stability when cornering and braking.
The result of careful analysis, the new rear spoiler keeps the new Clio Cup firmly on the ground, generating nearly 40kg of additional downforce at 120mph, while the roof scoop improves ventilation in the driver compartment. All in all, it’s a design offering the smoothest of aerodynamic flows.
CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION
Unlike its predecessors, the new Clio Cup comes complete with a welded roll cage, a first for a Renault Sport Technologies-designed car in this category and an innovation that obviously offers more in the way of safety than a bolted roll cage. The additional strength it provides also means better handling on corners. The new Clio Cup retains all the incisiveness and balance of the Cup chassis available as an option on the Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo EDC.
A lot of thought has gone into the new Clio Cup’s braking system, with the emphasis on both safety and performance.
An entirely new feature at this price level, the competition crankset allows precision setting of the front and rear master cylinders. Front-fitted AP Racing 320mm vented discs (8mm larger than on the previous Clio Cup) are gripped by four-piston Brembo callipers, while the rear-fitted solid discs are 260mm in diameter. Brake force distribution is achieved by a limiter acting on the rear circuit. A partnership with CL Brakes has also helped develop efficient endurance brake pads.
Following the same principles as the production car, the suspension system is equipped with new adjustable ZF Race Engineering shock absorbers. Along with adjustable geometry settings, they allow the new Clio Cup to be tuned for track days and specific driving styles with a minimum of fuss. The springs, comprising a stiffness of 110Nm at the front and 80Nm at the rear, guarantee a comfortable drive without undermining front-axle performance. The new Clio Cup also oversteers progressively during load transfers, enhancing driving pleasure.
The new Clio Cup can either be fitted with Michelin 20/61-17 for racing in the Eurocup or Dunlop 21/62-17 tyres in national championships. Crafted by Renault Design, its 17-inch rims are supplied by Speedline.
A BRAND NEW DIRECT-INJECTED TURBO ENGINE
After more than 20 years of naturally aspirated engines, the turbo makes its much-heralded return under the bonnet of a Renault Sport hot hatch. Optimised by the engineers at Les Ulis, the new 4-cylinder, direct-injection turbo engine has been built using state-of-the-art technology such as diamond-like carbon (DLC) push rods – as used in Formula One – and a double continuous variable camshaft timing (VVT) actuator. Designed for racing, it produces 220hp at 6000rpm and a maximum torque of 270Nm at 2500-5500rpm. This broader maximum range offers increased driveability compared to the naturally aspirated engines that preceded it.
In contrast to the Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo EDC, the race-prepared new Clio Cup features a new exhaust line with a muffler and built-in catalytic converter is fitted along with a model-specific airbox.
Oreca Magny-Cours is Renault Sport Technologies’s sole approved engine manufacturer for the new Clio Cup, with all engines being sealed after visiting the test bench to ensure a level playing field for all competitors.
Supplied by Sadev, the six-speed sequential gearbox is hooked up to the engine by an AP Racing competition clutch with built-in stop.
Steering-wheel paddle shifts are standard on both the Eurocup and UK versions of the car, while the all-new XAP electric actuator has trimmed the average gear-shift time to 100 milliseconds, a speed rarely seen in cars of this class.
Put through its paces in a test campaign of over 7,000 kilometres, the powertrain has proved its efficiency and reliability, not to mention its ease of use and maintenance.
ONBOARD ELECTRONICS
The nerve centre of the new Clio Cup, the Cosworth SQ7DI ECU manages both engine mapping and transmission shifting patterns. This unique control unit manages direct fuel injection and is sealed to prevent modifications from being made to it. Only Renault Sport Technologies can examine its contents in carrying out technical checks.
Hooked up to PI Toolbox software, which is also used in the Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5, it allows teams to get the most out of the data it generates.
AN ERGONOMIC DRIVER’S POSITION
Special care has been taken with the new Clio Cup’s interiors. Designed exclusively for Renault Sport Technologies by the engineers at Cosworth Electronics, the new dashboard reflects their attention to detail. The colour display screen shows all the diagnostics in real time as well as essential data for the driver: fastest lap, gap on a selected driver, track layout, etc.
The multi-functional steering wheel brings the most useful information within easy reach. Its seven buttons operate a wide variety of functions, each of which can come in handy during races, such as headlights, windscreen wipers and the display screen scroll. One of the buttons can also be hooked up to a free connector on the wiring loom to hook up an extra function, such as a radio or drink dispenser.
The secondary switches and controls can be found on the console on the driver’s right and include the start button, circuit-breaker, engine mapping selector switch (wet or dry) and brake limiter.
SAFETY
Safety is of the utmost importance for Renault Sport Technologies in every product it designs. Out on the track the priority is to offer drivers every protection in the event of an accident, and the new Clio Cup’s welded roll cage is the most visible and most important feature in this respect. Having undergone a series of stringent tests, the new Clio Cup in an FIA-approved car.
Supplied by Sabelt, the six-point harness and bucket seat with headrest are compatible with the HANS® system, while the driver is also protected by a window net.
All parts specific to the new Clio Cup and the structural parts of the new Clio Renault Sport 200 EDC have been marked to prevent the manufacture of counterfeits likely to endanger driver safety. These marks take the form of holograms and laser arcing.
CLIO CUP IN THE UK
Renault UK will celebrate 40 years of running championships in the UK in 2014 by launching the New Clio Cup race car into the market. Together with championship promoter the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) it has signed a three-year contract with TOCA, seeing the Renault UK Clio Cup remain a cornerstone of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship motor racing package until at least the end of 2016.
This agreement comes at the same time as Renault Sport Technologies has signed the BARC to be its UK promoter for the next three years.
The confirmation of these freshly agreed deals allowed the order books to open as early as possible for the brand new fourth generation Clio Cup race car which was officially presented to existing teams, drivers and invited media at Oulton Park in June with 10 ordered to date.
“Renault UK has been an integral part of the BTCC package for 21 seasons, since its inception, and we’re now looking forward to the arrival of the new Clio Cup race car in 2014 which will also be our 40th anniversary year in British motorsport”, said Jeremy Townsend, Renault UK Communications Director, “We’re at the start of an exciting new era for the championship, securing its continued place on the BTCC package is key to future success. On behalf of Renault UK, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Alan Gow [BTCC Series Director] and his team at TOCA for their continued support.”
Firmly established as the country’s foremost one-make saloon car championship and a prime feeder category for the BTCC, numerous Renault UK Clio Cup competitors have graduated into the national touring car series over the years including the likes of former Clio Cup Champions Tom Onslow-Cole and Dave Newsham, who are both racing in the BTCC this year.
Reigning FIA World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff and fellow WTCC racer Alex MacDowall both climbed the ladder from the Renault UK Clio Cup into the BTCC, before going on to compete at the highest level in the world championship.
“Renault has been an intrinsic part of the TOCA/BTCC events for over 20 years, and for very good reason”, said Alan Gow, Administrator and Series director of the BTCC, “The Clio Cup is a fantastically dynamic platform that budding BTCC drivers can launch their career from. It provides great racing for both the drivers and teams and of course, most importantly, our spectators and TV audiences.
“I’m extremely proud of our very close and long-standing relationship with Renault, which is set to continue until at least the end of 2016, and really look forward to the great racing that undoubtedly the brilliant new turbo Clio Cup car will produce.”
Ian Watson of the British Automobile Racing Club, which promotes the Renault UK Clio Cup, added: “Being part of the TOCA package is of paramount importance for a championship the stature of the Renault UK Clio Cup, we need to be racing in front of the biggest crowds and that’s what supporting the BTCC provides.
“To have agreed a new three-year TOCA contract is fantastic for all involved, it gives us the perfect platform on which to build for next season when the new fourth generation Clio Cup race car makes its UK debut.”
Teams currently competing in the Renault UK Clio Cup were given priority to place orders for the new 1.6-litre, turbo-powered car.
Priced 39,900 Euros plus VAT, the new Clio will come fitted as standard, for the first time, with a steering wheel mounted paddle-shift gear change system.
The fourth generation car has already been incredibly well received on the continent where it is making its competitive debut this year in the Eurocup Clio series. British squad Team Pyro currently fields Josh Files and David Dickenson in the pan-European category, Files dovetailing his programme there with a title bid in the Renault UK Clio Cup in the existing third generation car.
The 2014 New Clio Cup calendar will be announced alongside the BTCC dates in the Autumn. For the first time in five years the Clio Cup will return to Scotland to race at the challenging Knockhill Circuit in Fife as part of an eight race meeting programme.

2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC

Mercedes-AMG is unleashing the all-new 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC. The most powerful high-performance sedan in the luxury segment sets new standards in terms of driving dynamics, lightweight construction and efficiency. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine – the most powerful member of the M157 engine family, with an output of 577 hp and torque of 664 lb-ft – delivers effortlessly superior performance. Thanks to systematic lightweight construction based on the "AMG Lightweight Performance" philosophy, the 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is up to 220 pounds lighter than its predecessor. A new standard feature on the 2014 model is the performanceoriented AMG all-wheel-drive 4MATIC system. This not only enhances traction but represents a new dimension in driving dynamics in its segment. The design, equipment and appointments of the 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC meets the highest standards in terms of high-class appeal, quality and perfection, and will be available in U.S. showrooms in November 2013.
Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "Following the successful launch of the A45 AMG and the CLA45 AMG, the new S63 AMG 4MATIC highlights our expertise in the automotive high-end segment. Lightweight construction and absolute performance are among the key strengths of the new flagship model from Mercedes-AMG. The new S63 AMG 4MATIC likewise leads the way when it comes to perfection, high-class appeal and quality. We are also offering the S63 AMG 4MATIC with the performance-oriented AMG all-wheel drive system 4MATIC for the first time to target new markets: the S63 AMG 4MATIC is just the ticket for customers who attach importance to four-wheel drive due to weather conditions."
Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and Board Member of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "We have unquestionably achieved our aim of making the new S63 AMG 4MATIC more powerful, lightweight and efficient than its predecessor. In terms of driving dynamics as well, the S63 AMG 4MATIC has made giant leaps forward – not least thanks to the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive."
AMG Lightweight Performance: up to 220 pounds lighter than before
Systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy reduces the weight of the S63 AMG 4MATIC by up to 220 pounds compared to the predecessor model. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of AMG forged light-alloy wheels, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance two-piece brake system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminum. Installing a spare wheel recess made of carbon fiber, a material used in Formula 1, reduces the weight by a further 9 pounds. The S63 AMG 4MATIC also leads the way when it comes to power-to-weight ratio, boasting a figure of 7.9 lbs/hp, resulting in effortlessly superior performance. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds and the top speed is 186 mph (electronically limited).
In terms of maximum output and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series-produced V8 engine of all. With an output of 577 hp and a torque of 664 lb-ft, the AMG eight-cylinder motor from the M157 engine family outperforms all comparable engines. The fuel consumption of the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is lower than its predecessor, even though the engine output has been increased by 49 hp.
Technical highlights of the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine:
  • Direct gasoline injection with piezo injectors
  • Twin turbocharging
  • All-aluminum crankcase
  • Four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment
  • Air-to-water intercooler
  • Efficient cooling of engine oil, engine water and transmission oil
  • Lightweight composite oil pan
  • Alternator management
  • ECO Start/Stop function
AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps
The AMG sports exhaust system in the S63 AMG 4MATIC has automatic logiccontrolled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in "C" (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine's sound is more understated – perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and quicker, especially if the driver prefers an agressive driving style. The result is an even fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound.
Engine production at AMG
Like all AMG engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is assembled by hand at AMG, observing the highest levels of craftsmanship. Highly qualified engine builders assemble the M 157 in Affalterbach according to the "one man, one engine" philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine builder's signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz's high-performance brand.
Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 44 pounds
Following the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is the second AMG high-performance model to replace the conventional starter battery with a lithium-ion battery. The new technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 44 pounds. The high-performance battery is relatively resilient in cold temperatures and has compact dimensions. The S63 AMG 4MATIC is the world's first volume-produced vehicle with this type of battery concept.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission
Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The three transmission modes – "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual) – provide each driver with a personal set-up. In comfort-oriented "C" mode the ECO Start/Stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission characteristics with comfort-oriented gearshifts. In "C" mode the car generally starts in second gear, for ensured comfort and efficiency.
In the "S" and "M" transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO Start/Stop function is deactivated. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster and acoustically more emotional gearshifts.
Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive
The standard performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque so that 33 percent goes to the front axle and 67 percent is sent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high-performance driving dynamics and enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive likewise enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces (winter tires are required for winter conditions). Optimum traction is provided by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 37 lb-ft, which exploits the maximum friction connection potential of all four wheels.
The technical basis for the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires no additional installation space. The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission from the front axle differential to the front-left drive shaft is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel drive system of only 154 pounds, which also helps to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions.
The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist as standard. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. The vectoring of torque helps reduce understeer when turning into corners.
AIRMATIC Suspension
The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG ADAPTIVE sports suspension. The full air suspension system AIRMATIC is equipped with the Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS. One new feature is the continuous damping adjustment, which can be controlled independently in the compression stage and rebound stage. It allows better adaptation to the driving and road-surface conditions. "Comfort" and "Sport" suspension modes can be selected at the push of a button. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S63 AMG 4MATIC. These measures optimize the vehicle's agility when driving dynamically. With the redesigned front axle and the special all-wheel-drive set-up, the S63 AMG 4MATIC represents a new dimension in its segment when it comes to driving dynamics.
Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a variable steering ratio is the perfect complement as it greatly enhances vehicle handling and agility whilst maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In "Comfort" suspension mode, the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the "Sport" suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels stiff steering assistance – which tends to result in better road feel. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback and steering precision.
AMG light-alloy wheels based on systematic lightweight construction
The S63 AMG 4MATIC is available with AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while increasing strength and lowers the unsprung masses, resulting in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG light-alloy wheels – size 8.5x19 at the front and 9.5x19 at the rear with 255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tires respectively.
Optional extras include AMG forged light-alloy wheels, with size 8.5x20 at the front and 9.5x20 at the rear paired with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The AMG light-alloy wheels feature a high-quality, removeable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged metal. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport.
AMG ceramic high-performance two-piece brake system as an option for the first time
Extremely short stopping distances and immediate deceleration are a given for any AMG high-performance car. And the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is no exception as it is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG highperformance two-piece brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance twopiece brake system is available as an option for the first time. The more than 20 percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition to this, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and displays higher thermal stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system has front brake discs with a diameter of 16.5 inches and is recognizable by the "AMG Carbon Ceramic" logo on the bronze painted brake calipers.
Design: Confidence and exclusivity fused with sensuous forms
Powerful and exclusive, dramatic and prestigious – the new S63 AMG 4MATIC also makes a visual impression. The high-performance sedan's design is defined by the impressive blend of hallmark Mercedes sensual forms, classic architecture and a sleek silhouette with classic AMG design features. A large, upright and distinctly three-dimensional radiator grille underlines the special status of the S-Class – with an exciting contrast provided by the front apron with three large air dams. The front apron with the grille painted in high-gloss black displays the stylized "A" that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles and emphasizes the exclusivity and power of the S63 AMG 4MATIC. Flics in highgloss black on the side air intakes optimize the flow of air to the cooling modules – a design that is a familiar sight in motorsport. The threedimensional front splitter in silver shadow reduces lift.
Side sill panels with three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow make the vehicle appear closer to the road and create an aggressive flow along the side with the brand's hallmark "Dropping Line". Large light-alloy wheels are another trademark AMG feature: they afford a clear view of the AMG highperformance brake system. "V8 BITURBO" lettering in new, contemporary typography on the front fenders identifies the top-of-the-range eight-cylinder model. This new lettering also appears in the "S63 AMG" model designation on the trunk lid. The design is drawn to a powerful conclusion by the black diffuser insert with trim in silver shadow and the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with internal dynamic exhaust flaps.
Interior: eye-catching appointments, design and quality
Like the exterior design, the S63 AMG 4MATIC interior is a sophisticated combination of the athletic atmosphere of a true AMG automobile with classic Mercedes values such as improved interior dimensions, new control logic, new ergonomic touches, ease of use, safety, appeal and aesthetics. The newly developed AMG sports seats with electric adjustment, Memory function and seat heating offer the driver and front passenger more lateral support. Fine nappa leather in AMG V8 design with lavish perforations and AMG badges in the front and rear seat backrests create an exquisite and luxurious atmosphere on board. Special touches include the embossed emblem on the armrest of the front center console and the high-quality analog clock in IWC design, which for the first time features three-dimensional, milled metal hands and metal appliqués on the dial.
The AMG sports steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim, perforated leather in the grip area and aluminum shift paddles allows perfect vehicle control. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the highresolution TFT color display as an AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials: in addition to the AMG-specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG logo in the speedometer with 200 mph scale (left) and the "V8 BITURBO" lettering in the rev counter (right).
Selecting "Warm up" in the AMG main menu brings up two round dials indicating the engine oil and transmission oil temperatures. Vehicle configuration, for example activation of a certain transmission and suspension mode, is manipulated through the AMG main menu "Setup" by means of buttons on the center console. An S63 AMG 4MATIC pictogram on the TFT display between the speedo and rev counter gives the driver visual feedback. The upper section of the display contains a permanent gear indicator and, when manual transmission mode "M" is selected, also an upshift recommendation. At the lower edge, the activated transmission mode, the ESP® mode and the suspension set-up are displayed.
Intelligent Drive: new standards in safety
The S63 AMG 4MATIC likewise sets new standards in active and passive safety: what began with PRE-SAFE® ten years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS is now leading to a new dimension in driving. Comfort and safety have blended into one. Mercedes-Benz calls this "Intelligent Drive." New systems make the new S-Class even more comfortable and safe:
