New CR-V receives 5-Star Euro NCAP safety rating

The new British built Honda CR-V has been rated one of Europe‘s safest cars, according to new independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP, receiving the maximum 5-star rating.
The rating scheme focuses on the vehicle’s overall safety performance which gives consumers an easy to understand single score. The system considers occupant protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and the availability of driver aids. Since the introduction of Euro NCAP‘s current rating scheme (February 2009) all Honda models tested have achieved 5 stars - Accord, Insight, Jazz, CR-Z, Civic and most recently the new CR-V.

The new CR-V’s top safety rating reflects Honda’s commitment to overall vehicle safety. Honda’s commitment to safety is embodied by the term ‘Safety for Everyone; safety for drivers, but also safety for passengers, pedestrians and occupants of all vehicles. Honda’s car-to-car crash test facility at the Tochigi R&D plant analyses impacts between models of different sizes and weights and develops solutions to mitigate injuries for both passengers and pedestrians.

The new CR-V, produced at Honda’s state of the art manufacturing facility in Swindon, is the next model in the Honda line-up to receive the new Earth Dreams Technology 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine. The CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC is available in two-wheel drive with manual transmission and will feature 300Nm of torque and 120 PS with CO2 emissions of only 119g/km to provide an exceptional balance of performance and economy. This new derivative will go on sale in autumn 2013.

Safety Highlights in the Honda CR-V

• Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Traction Control

VSA is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking to the right- or left-hand wheels as necessary and modulating the engine torque output as required.

• Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering (MA-EPS)

The system detects instability in slippery conditions both during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction. In addition to improving efficiency and optimising driver feedback, the system helps to stabilise braking and mitigate understeer and oversteer.

• Emergency Stop System (ESS)

ESS automatically activates the brake and hazard warning lights (indicators) when it detects an emergency stop situation. The lights blink rapidly to warn following vehicles that the car is stopping abruptly, reducing the risk of a collision.

• Advanced Driving Assist Systems (ADAS)
This is a suite of three ground-breaking technologies that raise safety to a new level:

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
LKAS uses a camera to detect the car deviating from a traffic lane and provides steering torque when necessary, thereby enhancing safety.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
ACC allows you to choose both your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead. If this falls below the set level, the system instantly decelerates the vehicle. Where quicker deceleration is required ACC will alert the driver to apply the brakes.

Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
CMBS monitors the following distance and closing rate between your vehicle and the car directly in front of it, warning the driver when a collision is likely and helping reduce impact speed when a collision becomes unavoidable.

All ADAS systems are designed to complement the driver, not to replace their input.

• Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure
(ACE) Body Structure provides significantly enhanced occupant protection in a variety of real-world crash conditions. A front-mounted polygonal main frame is designed to prevent cabin deformation by distributing forces through multiple major load bearing pathways - and away from the passenger compartment. Additionally, ACE Body Structure helps to minimise the potential for under- or over-ride situations, this is particularly important where a frontal collision occurs between vehicles of differing heights, weights or frame construction.
• Pedestrian Protection
The construction of the front of the new CR-V is designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Specific pedestrian injury mitigation features include:
- An unobstructed area beneath the bonnet that allows greater space for deformation.
- Windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact
- Energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges

• Whiplash Mitigation System
The front seats of the new CR-V incorporate a whiplash mitigation system, which is designed to help mitigate the severity of neck injuries in the event of a rear impact.

New S-Class is the most advanced and luxurious Mercedes-Benz ever

The most advanced and luxurious Mercedes-Benz yet created – the new S-Class – has gone on-sale in the UK, priced from £62,650 OTR.
The S-Class has never ceased to raise technology standards, pioneering safety, comfort and engineering features such as ABS, anti-lock brakes, SRS airbag, ESP®, catalytic converters and Night View Assist. The new S-Class promises to continue to raise the benchmark in efficiency, in comfort, refinement and personalisation.
With a three engine line up of one diesel, one petrol and one petrol hybrid - S 350 BlueTEC, S 400 Hybrid and S 500 - the new range also offers two trim choices of SE Line and AMG Line, as well as the standard and long wheelbase options, with UK production commencing in September ahead of deliveries in October.
The new S-Class offers up to a nine per cent increase in power over the outgoing W 221 model (to 333 hp for the S 400 Hybrid), 18 per cent reduction in CO2 (147 g/km for the S 400 Hybrid) and 22 per cent improvement in fuel consumption (44.8 mpg for the S 400 Hybrid).
Improved levels of standard equipment over the already impressive outgoing S-Class, includes the addition of a reversing camera, COMAND Online NTG 5, full LED Intelligent Light System, DAB digital radio and Keyless Start.
Additional new equipment for the S-Class includes Magic Vision Control, the innovative wash/wipe system that applies washer fluid directly in front of the wiper blades to minimise waste and obstruction to the driver, enhanced AirMATIC full air suspension system with continuously adaptive damping control delivering a composed ride while retaining the ability to lower at speed (by 10 mm at 70 mph and a further 10 mm at over 100 mph) or rise by 30mm should it be required during low speed manoeuvres, and COMAND Online NTG 5 – the latest generation of telematics – all as standard.
The Magic Body Control suspension system debuts on the new S-Class – an option on the S 500 (£4,340). Linked to the new Road Surface Scan system, Magic Body Control uses a stereo camera located on the top edge of the windscreen to scan the road up to 15-metres ahead, allowing it to model a precise image of the road surface.
The system then uses this image to calculate if any action is required to react to uneven road surfaces. Should this be the case, the damping characteristics of each wheel can be influenced by Magic Body Control through the use of hydraulics operating at a pressure of 200 bar in a fraction of a second. This counteracts the pitching, rolling and lifting motions felt on uneven roads, creating unprecedented ride comfort.
Providing comfort, class-leading refinement and entertainment systems is the innovative new interior of the S-Class, equipped as standard with a pair of high-resolution TFT screens measuring 307 mm diagonally. They relay key vehicle information as well as allowing quick, intuitive access to the most sophisticated system of its kind, from the optional 1,540 watt Burmester 3D surround sound system with 24 specially designed speakers, 24 amplifier channels and three speakers integrated into the headlining (£6,430) to the range of perfumes emitted by the Air-Balance Package (£360) – a further function of which is the ionisation of the air entering the vehicle, passing through a filter system to improve the quality of the air and remove pollutants.
Three different seat packages are available in the rear – ranging from three seats finished in high quality leather to two individual seats complete with the ability seats to recline to an angle of 43.5 degrees. Furthermore, the seats can, if desired, simulate a hot stone massage for even greater comfort and the armrests can be heated.
With all the improvements in technology, in equipment, safety systems and efficiency, the new S-Class accounts for only a two per cent rise in price for the S 350 BlueTEC SE Line over the outgoing car. Prices start from £62,650 OTR for the S 350 BlueTEC SE Line, rising to £65,650 OTR for the S 350 BlueTEC L SE Line, £69,650 OTR for the S 400 Hybrid L SE Line and £88,130 OTR for the S 500 L AMG Line.

Advancing the Odyssey
In redesigning the Odyssey for 2014, Honda's goal was to reinforce and expand upon the vehicle's already great features, including the exceptional value for money that already defines the Odyssey for its target buyers: Gen X and Gen Y families. Odyssey aims to surprise and delight by adding upgrades and amenities, making it once again the top pick among individual buyers.
Powertrain
The 2014 Odyssey features a 3.5-liter, 24-valve V-6 engine producing 248 hp at 5,700 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. Honda's i-VTEC® enhances power delivery while Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) helps maximize fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
With the 2014 model, Honda has targeted best-in-class fuel economy ratings for all trim levels. As a result, the transmission has been upgraded to a 6-speed automatic across the model range, replacing the 5-speed automatic previously found on the LX, EX and EX-L. EPA fuel economy ratings are now 19/28 mpgcity/highway for all trim levels, up 1 mpg in both city and highway for the LX, EX and EX-L trims. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions certification remains an impressive ULEV-2.
Body
Refined and youthful, sporty and advanced, the Odyssey's refreshed styling adds new premium elements for 2014. Highlights include new black-trimmed headlights, new available fog lights, a new muscular hood, and black-surround grille for an upscale appearance. New body-color matched side mirrors and additional bright chrome trim add to the premium appearance. New rear styling and LED taillights with clear lenses and eye-catching perimeter "light pipes" add to the polished look.
Weight savings come from the use of aluminum for the hood, front fenders and front suspension lower control arms. The LX model features 17-inch steel wheels with premium covers, while EX and EX-L models utilize 17-inch premium aluminum alloy wheels. Touring and Touring Elite models feature 18-inch premium sport aluminum alloy wheels.
The 2014 Odyssey EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite models have a wiper-linked headlight system that automatically turns on the headlights when the front wipers are activated. In addition, new standard one-touch turn signals improve convenience for the driver when making routine lane changes. With this system, one flick of the turn-signal lever provides three blinks of the turn signals - ideal for changing lanes. Pressing the lever past the "click point" provides continuous blinking.
A new keyless entry system with push button start on EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite allows the driver to approach the vehicle, open the door and start the engine - all without touching a key. The system only requires the driver have possession of the key fob. The system also simplifies opening the sliding side doors and tailgate - locking all doors when leaving the vehicle requires only touching the lock button on any door handle.
Interior
Redesigned instrumentation, new trim and fabric, and upgraded electronic features and functionality make the 2014 Odyssey interior ideal for families. Design changes include upgraded meter illumination and interior lighting, chrome-trimmed instrument dials and door handles, a new available 7-inch touch-screen, and a repositioned DVD player for the available Rear Entertainment System. Updated styling and a change from blue to white halo lighting make the instrumentation easier to read. Similar changes make the climate control easier to operate.
All 2014 Odyssey models and trim levels get an Expanded View Driver's Mirror. The driver's side mirror provides a 19-percent increase in visible area, offering an enhanced view of objects that might otherwise be hidden in the vehicle's blind spot. Included on Odyssey EX, EX-L and Touring models, the Honda LaneWatch™ blind spot display provides an expanded rear view of the passenger side roadway. The system uses a camera mounted on the bottom of the passenger door mirror, which when activated by the right turn signal or the signal-stalk LaneWatch™ button, displays a live, 80-degree view of the passenger-side roadway, compared to 18- to 22-degrees typical of a standard door mirror.
A rearview camera is standard on all Odyssey models. Odyssey LX, EX and EX-L models feature a single-angle "Normal View" display, while EX-L Navi, Touring and Touring Elite models have a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with wide, normal and top-down views - all with improved optical quality. All rearview camera systems feature guidelines.
HondaVAC™
The Odyssey Touring Elite features the first minivan in-vehicle vacuum cleaner system, HondaVac™ which is designed to help families keep the minivan interior neat and clean. Engineered for dry use, the HondaVAC™ operates on the vehicle's 12-volt electrical system, and its performance easily surpasses that of a handheld rechargeable vacuums.
Integrated in the rear cargo area of the vehicle, the HondaVAC™ includes an extendable hose that can reach every corner of the vehicle. Two separate head attachments expand versatility, while a removable debris canister and replaceable filter bag makes maintaining the vacuum easy. To protect the vehicle battery's state of charge, the HondaVAC™ runs up to eight minutes with the ignition turned to the Accessory setting - or continuously if the engine is running.
Audio & Entertainment
Odyssey EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite models have new intuitive touch panel controls that reduce button clutter on the center stack. An upper 8-inch display and a lower 7-inch display provide a simpler overall interface improving usability.
When paired to a compatible cellular phone, Aha™ and Pandora® interfaces are available on EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite models. XM® Radio is included in EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite models, a HDD audio system comes on the EX-L Navi, Touring and Touring Elite models, and a rear DVD player is standard in EX-L RES, Touring and Touring Elite models. The Touring Elite also features HD Radio and new Neural 5.1 Surround™ audio.
Audio system output is 240 watts for Odyssey LX, 270 watts for EX, EX-L and EX-L RES, and 246 watts for EX-L Navi and Touring. The premium audio system in the Odyssey Touring Elite has 650 watts. All audio systems have seven speakers except for the Touring Elite, which features 12 speakers.
Simplified pairing and enhanced functionality with smart phones improve the Odyssey's telematics for 2014. HandFreeLink® is included on all models, and Bluetooth® audio streaming, SMS and email functions are available with compatible smartphones. Additional features include a phonebook, call history, speed dial and contact picture. Odyssey EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite include HondaLink™ featuring Aha™ which offers content from hundreds of channels through a tethered compatible smartphone.
The Rear Entertainment System (RES) on the EX-L RES, Touring and Touring Elite models features upgraded control layout and screen quality. This system features improved placement of the DVD player and more intuitive operation for the rear audio controls. Screen resolution is VGA on EX-L RES and Touring models, and the Touring Elite's upgraded ultra-widescreen offers four times higher resolution.
Safety
With the application of the next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, significant structural changes to the unit-body were made, including more extensive use of high-strength steel in the A-, B- and C-pillars, roof rails, floor rails, front body area, and front subframe. As a result, the front door opening is now stronger, with less chance of deformation in a frontal collision.
The previous Odyssey achieved a top Good rating in IIHS Front Crash, Side Crash, Rear Crash and Roof Crush tests. For 2014, the Odyssey is targeted to add a GOOD rating in the IIHS's rigorous new Small Overlap Barrier Test and be among the first minivans to receive the highest IIHS rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+.
Newly available on the Odyssey, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) help the driver indentify potential collision situations. Using the Odyssey's front camera module, FCW warns of a possible collision with a vehicle detected in front, while LDW notifies the driver of departures from detected lanes5. The two systems are packaged together on Odyssey EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite models, and provide visual and audible warnings.

Citroën to enter FIA WTCC with Sébastien Loeb in 2014

After dominating several road-based events around the world for over twenty years, Citroën is now set to turn its attention to track racing, entering the FIA World Touring Car Championship (FIA WTCC) from 2014 onwards. This will be a new challenge for both Citroën Racing and for Sébastien Loeb, who will be driving one of the cars entered in the championship.
Citroën Racing has spent the last few months looking in detail at the opportunity of going ahead with this programme,” revealed Frédéric Banzet, CEO of the Citroën Brand. “The WTCC is based on several aspects that are essential to Citroën: extensive media coverage, regulations that keep costs down and a genuinely global race calendar. Our involvement in this championship will give us not only another chance to showcase our Créative Technologie but it will also help us to develop the Brand in promising, growth markets such as China, Russia and South America. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our longstanding partner, Total, who will remain at our side for this new adventure.”
Citroën Racing’s entry into the world of track racing will coincide with the introduction of a new generation of cars, which are more spectacular than the current crop. “Competing in a category for the first time, starting from scratch, gives our division a superb challenge,” confirmed Yves Matton, Citroën Racing Team Principal.  “Having said that, we will be able to re-use a large part of our existing expertise, starting with the DS3 WRC’s 1.6-litre direct injection turbo engine. Work has already begun in our Versailles technical centre and is set to be stepped up in the coming weeks, with the first tests of our car and the start of our development programme to prepare for the 2014 season. Obviously, we’re still committed to rallying and we’ll continue to work hard to try and get the best possible result in 2013. Our partnership with Abu Dhabi is set to be reinforced, enabling us to continue to be involved in WRC with a new system and with new objectives.”
Citroën Racing will be taking part in the entire 2014 FIA WTCC season. After winning nine World Rally Championship Drivers’ titles in a Xsara, C4 and DS3 WRC, Sébastien Loeb has made no secret of his enthusiasm about tackling this challenge with his favourite team: “First of all, I am pleased that this has been confirmed. It’s a bit of a dream to think that we are going to write a new chapter in our history. I can’t wait to get out on track in the car and start testing. I have used this transitional year to try out various experiences and to improve my track driving skills. I don’t expect to win straight away, but I am determined to get there one day.”
